Williams snatches victory in junior men’s National Hill Clim

Tom Williams (Webbs 1902 CC) took his maiden national title by winning the junior men’s RTTC National Hill Climb Championship sponsored by Irwin Mitchell Solicitors by a single second.

The 16-year-old, from Wick Bristol, in Gloucestershire, flew up the 0.8-kilometre hill in a time of two minutes and 20.85 seconds.

The hill, with an average gradient of 13% and a maximum of 25.9%, runs from near Streatley School and heading towards Goring & Streatley Golf Club with the steepest section after the half-way point.

As he headed out of the damp tree section at the top Williams, who also won the Severn RC event earlier this month on another short climb, was top of the podium positions again recording an average speed of 12.7 miles per hour.

His time also smashed the previous junior men’s course record of 2-42.66 which was set by Peter Bissell in 2004.

Matthew Houlberg (Meudon Pedal Heaven Le Col RT) hit form at the right time taking double victories last weekend in the Farnham RC and East Sussex CA events over three-minute climbs.

Despite chasing Williams all the way for victory, he ran out of road and had to settle for second place just a second back in 2-21.41.

The battle for the final podium position was also a tight one with just a second separating 16-year-olds Lukas Nerurkar (VC de Londres) and William Smith (Verulam Really Moving).

Nerurkar, who won the Brighton Mitre event on Steyning Bostal and the Sussex CA hill climb, eventually powered his way to third position clocking 2-23.68 with Williams a further second back (2-24.35).
