Edwin Wilfred Speake Smith 
'Eddie' or 'EWS' to all who knew him
23rd October 1932 - 29th October 2019

Here is a potted history of Eddie’s association with both RTTC (Road Time Trials Council), and CTT (Cycling Time Trials).
 
1960: Elected to RTTC Midland District Committee
1967 - 2017: Elected Midland District Treasurer. He handed ‘over the reins’ in 2017 following 50 consecutive years.
1978 - 2009: Elected a RTTC National Committee member until a constitutional change in 2002 to CTT whereby National Committee members became Directors of the Board of CTT. He “stood down” in 2009 after 32 years service.
1997: Received the RTTC Gold Badge of Honour. This prestigious award was given for his continuous service to the sport of time trialling.
2000 - 2015: Elected Chairman of Midland District Committee.
2017: Received CTT’s “Certificate of Honour”.
2018: Finally stood down from all Committee work, making sure it was in ‘safe hands’.
 
Eddie was a wonderful servant to the RTTC/CTT for over 65 years, covering many administrative roles whilst continuing to enjoy his racing and ensuring our sport continued on the public highways. He was a well-respected member of the national and local cycling community, with an easy unflappable style of negotiating any difficult issue. He ensured the police authorities were kept fully up to date with our rules and regulations. He was instrumental in ensuring the authorities were made aware of our “rights” to pace on the public highways. Eddie was also a great ‘motivational’ officer to many ‘newbies’ on the National and local administration scene.
