Race Report: A Morning of Fast Times and Stand‑Out Performances

Warm temperatures and barely a breath of wind made for excellent racing conditions this morning, giving riders every opportunity to post quick times on a course that rewards power and consistency. With a strong field and ideal weather, the stage was set for some exceptional performances - and the riders certainly delivered.

Record‑Breaking Ride for Chris Gibbard

The headline result came from Chris Gibbard, who not only won the event outright but also broke Chris Massey’s VTTA MV45 group record by an impressive 13 seconds. Massey’s mark, set on the renowned V718 back in 2017, has long been a benchmark - making Gibbard’s ride all the more remarkable.

Youth Rider Shows Grit After Early Misfortune

Although there was only one youth competitor, Ben Cleave produced one of the most talked‑about rides of the day. A dropped chain just a few hundred metres after the start looked set to ruin his race, especially as he was on track for a certain “20” on a course he knows well. After stopping to fix the issue, he still powered to a 21:13, finishing 8th overall — a superb display of determination and talent.

His father, Nic Cleave, also had reason to celebrate, taking the road bike vet on standard award with +4:00.

Linda Dewhurst Shines in the Women’s Categories

For many spectators, the standout performance came from 67‑year‑old Linda Dewhurst (Cheltenham & County), who delivered a sensational ride to take fastest female with 22:49. She also topped the vet on standard standings with a superb +8:37, underlining her enduring class and competitive spirit.

Promoting Club Riders Deliver PBs

There was plenty to celebrate among the promoting club’s riders too, with several personal bests recorded. Rob Jones, Angela Hussain, and Matt Jones all improved their times, reflecting the favourable conditions and strong early‑season form.

The club’s sole category win came in the road bike division, thanks to a strong ride from Rhys Lloyd, who secured the top spot.Port Talbot wheelers open 10
