Since the AGM, the Board of Cycling Time Trials has been working across a wide range of areas to support riders, clubs, organisers and volunteers, while continuing to strengthen the future of time trialling across the UK.
Below is a brief update on some of the key areas currently being progressed.
Championships & Event Coordination
CTT Championship events continue to attract many of the country’s leading riders. However, we recognise the ongoing concerns around calendar clashes, particularly where events overlap with VTTA championships and other major fixtures.
Long-distance events remain especially challenging due to the limited number of suitable courses available nationally. We are therefore exploring ways to improve coordination through stronger District collaboration and continued discussions with the VTTA.
Also under discussion is how we balance the need to distribute major events to different districts around the country whilst not impacting entry numbers due to travel distances. Any suggestions or ideas would be welcomed.
Roadworks & Event Disruption
Roadworks and temporary traffic management continue to create difficulties for organisers and competitors alike, often at very short notice.
Several early-season Classic Series events have already been affected. Organisers are encouraged to submit police notifications for reserve courses wherever possible, helping minimise disruption and reducing the risk of cancellation should issues arise.
Whilst most organiser will be aware, its worth reminding that whilst we can simply “notify” the Police for an event if its more than 28 days ahead, we must receive specific written permission if notifying at less than 28 days. This can be challenging!
Marketing & Communications
A huge thank you goes to all organisers who continue to submit race reports throughout the season. These reports help capture the atmosphere, achievements and stories that make our sport unique. We are getting more and more coming through each week and this really allows us to keep current and interesting content on the website and social media. If anyone wishes to collaborate with content or articles, please do get in touch.
Our “Behind the Visor” feature continues to receive excellent feedback, shining a spotlight on riders, volunteers and individuals across the sport. Suggestions for future features are always welcome.
We are also exploring how CTT’s technology platforms can better support event promotion, increase entries and improve visibility of results.
Insurance
While racing remains central to everything CTT does, it is reassuring to know that riders, officials, volunteers and members of the public are protected through the organisation’s insurance arrangements.
Insurance remains CTT’s single largest annual cost, and the organisation has historically benefited greatly from guidance provided by members working within the insurance industry. If you work within the sector and feel able to offer support or advice, we would be pleased to hear from you.
We will shortly be sharing communications regarding the CTT's continued partnership with Yellow Jersey and the Personal Accident insurance that is provided when an event is entered online (assuming you opt in!). This includes club events if the club offers the online entry for it - another reason for it to be used.
Strategy & Vision
One of the Board’s key priorities since the AGM has been the development of a clear Vision and Strategy for the organisation.
This work is nearing completion and will help provide a stronger framework for future decision-making and the long-term development of the sport.
Wider Collaboration
CTT is keen to strengthen relationships with other governing bodies and cycling organisations where mutual benefits exist.
We already have regular discussions with the VTTA and are setting up a liaison group to formalise this. Initial discussions with Scottish Cycling have already taken place to explore opportunities for closer collaboration and sharing of best practice.
The CTT AGM
The AGM remains one of the most important events in the CTT calendar, giving District delegates the opportunity to debate proposals and shape the future direction of the organisation.
It is also one of the organisation’s larger annual expenses. A working group has therefore been established to explore potential ways of reducing costs while fully maintaining the democratic process at the heart of CTT.
Champions Lunch
The CTT Champions Lunch remains an important celebration of our National Champions and a valuable opportunity for riders and volunteers to come together.
Attendance has declined in recent years and we are exploring how awareness and promotion of the event can be improved moving forward.
Sharing Success
While participation numbers remain under pressure across many organised sports, some clubs, Districts and events continue to attract strong fields and excellent engagement.
We are keen to understand what successful organisers and clubs are doing particularly well, and whether those approaches can be shared more widely across the sport. Please share any insights you might have.
Finance Update
Following personnel changes earlier this year, the Finance team has worked extremely hard to ensure all financial processes were fully updated ahead of the March year-end.
Thanks to a significant collective effort, and support from DJH Mitten Clarke, all required submissions were completed on time.
Your Feedback
The Board remains keen to hear from riders, clubs, organisers and Districts across the country. Constructive feedback and shared experiences remain invaluable as we continue working to support and grow the sport.
Thank you to everyone who continues to give their time, enthusiasm and commitment to time trialling throughout the UK.
