The National 24-Hour Time Trial Championship takes place in Cheshire this weekend, with a fascinating list of riders set to tackle the day-long event.
Starting at 1pm on Saturday afternoon, the hardy souls will keep going through the night and into Sunday using a variety of circuits to clock up several hundred miles in the pursuit of glory.
Second last year, Mark Turnbull (TORQ Performance) returns in a bid to go one better, but national ranking system Spindata predicts former national 12-hour champion Adam Wild (GS Metro) to be the favourite after making a comeback following a few years out of competitive cycling.
Multiple national record holder Michael Hutchinson (Arctic Aircon RT) could also be right up there, while Lee Williams (Fulfil the Potential Race Team) will be aiming to improve on the runner-up spot he secured in 2021.
In the women’s event Derby Mercury RC rider Amy Hudson was third last year and will be among the favourites for victory this time, while Spindata has Poole Wheelers’ Michelle Lindley, Rebecca Mason (Malton Wheelers) and New Forest CC’s Sien Van Der Plank among the top contenders.
The event is once again organised by the Mersey Roads Club, and is the 80th such event. It also incorporates the Veterans TTA National Championship.
Elsewhere in Cheshire, Congleton CC are staging a 50-mile time trial near Cranage with a close battle expected between Alex Royle (Manchester BC) and David Parkin (Velotik RT) with Spindata suggesting they will be separated by just three seconds.
Keep an eye out too for another Velotik RT rider in David James Williams, while the women’s category has the promoting club’s Alice Taylor, Anna Birrell of Total Tri Training, Samantha Bissell (City RC Hull) and Joanna Cebrat (360cycling) down to challenge for the podium.
Cleveland Coureurs and VTTA North are combining forces once again to organise the Teesside District 25-mile Championships near Ingleby Barwick in North Yorkshire.
Army Cycling’s Sue McFarlane is tipped to be fastest female, while North Lancashire Road Club’s Sue Cheetham, Sarah Foulds (Team VC) and Theresa Taylor (Springfield Financial RT) also chasing the podium.
Adam Duggleby (ADDFORM Vive le Velo) is listed by Spindata as favourite in the open event, with others to watch out for including Team Bottrill’s Juliam Ramsbottom and Chris Isats (Berwick Wheelers).
In Cornwall Giant Helston are staging a 25-mile event this Sunday.
Eve Sealy (Tri Logic Cornwall) and Beth Berriman (Penzance Wheelers) are challenging for the win in the women’s event, while a close battle is expected in the open event between Conrad Moss (Nopinz) and Steve Lampier (Kernow Racing Team), with youngster James Pearcy (Mid-Devon CC) also in the mix.
Continuing his preparation for the National 25-Mile Championships in a week’s time, John Archibald (HUUB WattShop) tackles the Pendle Forest CC 10 on Saturday evening, where Spindata predicts a time of 17-21.
Others to watch include Sheffrec CC’s Thomas Lee, as well as Team Bottrill junior Joe Cosgrove and Lewis Wake (Team Kirkley Cycles).
Other events on Saturday include the Addiscombe CC 10 in Surrey and the Chronos RT 10 in Cambridgeshire.
Sunday sees the Chelmer CC hold a 25-mile event in Essex, as well as the Portsmouth North End CC 25 near Wickham in Hampshire.
GTR Return to Life are holding a three-up over 31.5 miles in North Ayrshire, while also in Scotland it’s the Kennoway RC 10 near Freuchie in Fife.
