Deborah Moss continues to rack up the veteran titles as the atmosphere and the ‘extra buzz’ at national events drives her forward.

The 53-year-old clinched the VTTA National 50 and 30-mile championship crowns last season adding to two titles the previous season.

Despite the national 50 not being her preferred distance the Springfield Financial Racing Team rider recorded a winning time of 2-06-01, which equated to a standard of +27.27.

“I always think that I can’t do 50 miles and I prefer the shorter ones,” said Moss. “It was a really horrible day, it was really windy and hot.

“I had a plan and shortly after I set off I decided it wasn’t going to happen because the wind and the heat. I just got into a rhythm and got on with it.

“I just got to the end basically as it was so difficult.”

The VTTA British Championship 30 followed in July when the veteran rider completed the out and back Scottish course in 1-13-09.

Moss has also provided tough competition in the RTTC events placing 15th in the National 10-mile Championship and sixth in the National Closed Circuit, when she was also quickest veteran.

The Springfield Financial Racing Team rider has more national competitions in her mind for 2024 season.

“I don’t think I’ve other done the VTTA National 10, but it’s in Doncaster this year so that is do-able for me,” she added.

“I don’t mind a 10 as the pain is over really quick, about 25 minutes it’s about right. I’ll look at which nationals are easiest to travel too and then pick a couple to do.

“I like the atmosphere at nationals to be honest, you just get some of that extra buzz.

“I try not to get too giddy early on, I’ve written all the main national races down on my calendar and then I’ll try and work around which ones I can get too.”

Linda Dewhurst (Team Milton Keynes) clinched the VTTA National 10-mile Championship last season after posting a time of 24-27 and could again provide a formidable opponent again this season.

Meanwhile, Moss expects Angela Carpenter (a3crg) to be another tough opponent in the VTTA national championships this year.

“Linda started racing last year and so she is pretty quick,” added Moss.

“There is always plenty of competition. Angela Carpenter has won everything. She’ll be back next year. It should be an interesting year.”
