Photo: The Independent Pedaler-Nopinz continued their domination of domestic time trialling, winning both the men’s and women’s titles at the National 50-Mile Championships in Cheshire on Sunday.
Joanna Patterson was victorious in the women’s event and led a clean sweep of the podium with Alex Clay and Jennifer George to take the team prize too.
Plus Chris Fennell was the winner of the men’s title, adding to his 100-mile title taken earlier in the season.
Second and third in the men’s event, Phil Williams and Ashley Cox were joined by Tom Hutchinson in the winning team, Team Bottrill.
Olympian Ethan Vernon (Team Inspired) took victory in the Coalville Wheelers 19.8 on Bank Holiday Monday, while Alison Fovargue (Team Empella Cyclocross.com) won the women’s event.
Vernon was part of the GB team pursuit outfit at the Tokyo Olympics and the 21-year-old took his first open time trial victory by covering the 19.8-mile course in 40 minutes and 11 seconds some 46 seconds faster than her nearest rival.
Also on Monday, Islington CC’s Jonny Allen took his first individual victory of the season at the Essex Roads CC 25, while Julia Freeman (Easterley Road Club) was fastest female.
Simon McNamara (HuntBikeWheels.com) secured one and a half wins over the weekend – victorious in the Sussex CA 10 on Saturday and tying for victory in Monday’s Sussex CA 25-mile event, where he shared the prize with Matthew Smith (Team TMC).
In-form veteran Angela Carpenter (a3crg) set a new course record and a provisional age group national record on her way to victory in the Royal Dean Forest CC 25-mile event near Usk.
She clocked 51-12 to take the win, while fastest overall was Conrad Moss (Primera-TeamJobs) who made it six wins in a row with 46-59.
In Northumberland Marcel Schubert (Darlington CC) secured his eighth open time trial win of the season so far at the Blaydon CC 23-mile event near Morpeth, while Jen McMahon (Sub Rosa) was quickest woman.
Schubert’s time of 52-50 gave him the win by 28 seconds from Lewis Timmins (Vector Racing), while McMahon’s time of -05-14 gave her the women’s prize by more than six minutes.
And in Norfolk Darran Bennett (Ely & District CC) took victory by just nine seconds in the CC Breckland 30, while Jackie Field (CC Ashwell) won the women’s event.
Bennett’s time was 1-00-49 while Paul Jay (Drag2zero) had to settle for second.
On Saturday the Border City Wheelers’ 10-mile time trial in Cumbria was won by Douglas Watson (GTR Return to Life) and Rachel Brown (Stomp the Medal).
48-year-old Watson clocked 19-48 on the Newbiggin-on-Lune course to win by 25 seconds from Ross Walton (GS Metro) while 35-year-old Brown covered the course in 23-17 to finish as fastest female by almost two minutes.
In hill-climbing Andy Nichols (Team Lifting Gear Products-Cycles in Motion) and Madeline Heywood (Team Watto) showed their form by taking victories in the Sheffrec CC HC on Woodfall Lane on Friday evening.
