Photo: Prolific time trial ace Angela Carpenter powered to another national title on Saturday as she won the Veterans TTA 30-Mile Championships in North Yorkshire, while Peter Greenwood was the male winner on handicap.
In-form Carpenter, 52 and riding for a3crg, has already won this season’s VTTA 15-Mile Championship to add to her 10- and 25-mile wins in 2020. She covered the course in 1-07-30 to record a handicap time of 56-46 and win by almost five minutes. She was also the fastest female on actual time.
69-year-old Greenwood (Clayton Velo) was top male on handicap with a time of 1-00-18 from an actual time of 1-09-56, edging out Keith Ainsworth (Sheffrec CC) by just three seconds. Second on handicap in the women’s event was Deborah Moss (Team Merlin).
Elsewhere, Paul Jay secured his first victory of the season in fast conditions at the VC Baracchi 50, while Gillian Leech was a clear winner of the women’s event in Norfolk.
44-year-old Jay (Drag2zero) clocked 1-51-19 to win by more than a minute, while Leech’s time of 2-09-34 gave her the women’s win by almost three and a half minutes.
Over the same distance Alastair Ribbands (Manchester Wheelers) was victorious in the Warrington Road Club event in Cheshire in a time of 1-50-48, while Lucy Rogers (Congleton CC) was best woman.
Over a shorter distance 24 hours later, Ribbands went on to win the Yorkshire Road Club hill-climb in West Yorkshire on Cragg Vale.
He clocked 16-02.9 for the 4.8-mile climb, while Joanna Blackburn (Team Bottrill) was fastest female in both this event on Cragg Vale and the Sitwell CC evening climb at Ulley on the same day.
On Cragg Vale she set a new women’s course record time of 17-17.1, before clocking 1-45.3 at Ulley, where Andy Nichols (Team Lifting Gear Products) was victorious in 1-13.9.
Similarly, it was not Nichols’ first win of the weekend, having also tasted victory in the Team Sheffield 10-mile time trial in North Nottinghamshire that morning.
His time of 20-37 for the course near Cuckney gave him the win by 16 seconds from Andy Thomas (Lindsey Roads CC), while Barnsley Road Club’s Josie Smith was fastest female there.
In Kent, National Circuit and National 100-mile champion Chris Fennell completed his preparations for this Sunday’s National 50-Mile Championship with a convincing victory in the Catford CC 25 near New Romney.
Riding for The Independent Pedaler-Nopinz, he clocked 48-30 to beat brother Nic Fennell (Thanet RC) by 2-45, while fastest female and team-mate at The Independent Pedaler, Alex Clay was third overall and quickest woman with 54-17.
In Devon, Conrad Moss (Primera TeamJobs) made it six wins in a row with victory in the Mid-Devon CC 25-mile time trial, clocking 49-28 to beat Gavin MacDougall (RNRMCA) by more than three minutes. Meanwhile, Catherine Hilton (Sid Valley CC) won the women’s prize with 1-02-09.
A new women’s course record was set by Leah Dixon (Wales Racing Academy) despite wet conditions at the the Fibrax Wrexham RC 25, while Sean Mullen (Port Sunlight Wheelers) was a clear men’s winner.
Dixon clocked 52-41 to win the women’s event by almost 12 minutes, while Mullen’s time of 48-32 gave him the win by around three and a half minutes.
And in Wales FTP Racing youngster Jake Sargent made it three wins in a row with victory in the Virtual CC 25 near Usk. He clocked 46-59 to beat Owen Burgess (Newport Phoenix) into second by around a minute and a half, while Michelle Lee (PDQ Cycle Coaching) was the pick of the women in 56-11.
