Photo: National honours will be up for grabs this Sunday when 120 riders line up for the RTTC National 100-Mile Championships in South Wales.
A change of course will see the R100/8A used with riders completing four laps of an out and back course between Abergavenny and Mitchel Troy starting and finishing near Raglan.
The event is sponsored by Kalas - https://www.kalas.co.uk/ - with a specially designed Kalas national champion’s jersey going to the winners.
Last year’s National 100 Mile Champions Adam Wild (GS Metro) and Katrina Matthews (Army Cycling) are both absent meaning that new champions will be crowned.
However, last year’s women’s runners-up Alex Clay (The Independent Pedaler – Nopinz) will be looking to go one better this time out.
Clay has not ridden a 100-mile event so far this season but did win the Kent CA 50 in May clocking a time of 1-53-42.
Lizi Duncombe (Socks4Watts Race Team) starts as last woman and has been in 100-mile action this season winning the North Lancashire Time Trial Association 100 in a time of 3-48-35.
Duncombe familiarised herself with the course last weekend with the Bike-Pace 50 also using the A40 and she won the event in 1-53-28.
Other contenders for the women’s podium places include veteran Jo Buckland (FTP Fulfil The Potential Racing) along with The Independent Pedaler – Nopinz duo Jennifer George and Joanna Patterson.
Frances Owen (Fibrax Wrexham RC) has also been in good form this season winning the West Wales Cyclists’ League 100.
National Circuit Champion Christopher Fennell (The Independent Pedaler – Nopinz) will be looking for a second national crown for the season in the men’s event.
Fennell has an unbeaten record this season of 10 wins but the last time he competed over 100 miles was in the Kent CA 100 in four years ago winning in 3-34-49.
After finishing third last season Adam Duggleby (Almerico Vive Le Velo) will be looking to take top spot this time out.
Duggleby has been beaten only once from 10 individual rides this season and has a UCI Para-cycling World title to his name as a tandem pilot with the Great Britain Cycling Team.
However, all of his many open victories this season have come in 10 or 25-mile events and his last 100-mile race was in last year’s National 100.
On that occasion Duggleby clocked 3-31-26 which was three minutes down on victor Wild.
Tom Hutchinson (Team Bottrill) will start as scratch rider after winning the North Lancashire Time Trial Association 100 earlier in June in a time of 3-26-34 which was six minutes clear of his nearest challenger.
A host of other riders will also be aiming for honours including Phil Williams (Team Bottrill), George Fox (George Fox Cycling Solutions) and Christopher Gibbard (Bynea Cycling Club) amongst others.
