Photo: National records were broken in Cambridgeshire at the Leo RC 30 on Saturday, while across the country riders continued their preparations for the National Hill-Climb Championships in Devon next month.
Ian Greenstreet (AeroCoach) and Rachael Elliott (Newbury RC) powered their way to an impressive time of 56-54 in the Leo RC 30 near Newmarket to beat their own mixed tandem record for the distance, while in the solo event the junior female national record was lowered by Southend Wheelers’ Katie-Ann Elliston with a time of 1-17-16.
Actual fastest was Drag2zero ace Matthew Smith whose time of 56-30 gave him the win by 50 seconds from Jason Bouttell (Team Vision Racing), while veteran Jackie Field (CC Ashwell) was fastest female with 1-07-28.
In hill-climbing, B38-Cycles in Motion rider Calum Brown notched up two more course records in two days last weekend.
He rode the Bute Wheelers’ climb of the Serpentine in Rothesay on Saturday and lowered the old record by 11 seconds, and then set a new record time for Mill Lee Road in Bradfield, near Sheffield, on Sunday. His time of 48.8 seconds gave him the victory in the B38 event, with the course being used for the first time.
Glasgow Nightingale CC rider Anna Anderson was quickest female on the Serpentine, clocking 2-39to win that prize by 8.1 seconds, while fastest woman in the B38-Cycles in Motion climb on Sunday was Hannah Larbalestier (University of Sheffield CC) with 1-23.4.
Also notching up two wins last weekend was national championship contender Dan Evans (ASSOS Equipe UK) who won Barrow Central Wheelers’ climb near Ambleside on Saturday, before proving fastest on the Nant Gwynant Pass in North Wales, staged on Sunday by Clwb Beicio Egni/Energy Cycles.
Evans clocked 12.26 to win by 36 seconds from Kirk Vickers (Holohan Coaching) on the Sunday, while Rebecca Richardson (Brother/UK Fusion) was quickest woman in 14.44 for an impressive 11th overall in the field of 38 riders.
In Northumberland, overall victory in the Allen Valley Velo two-stage went to Blaydon CC’s Marcus Cram in 17-02.6, around 56 seconds better than second-placed Matty Smith (Muckle CC). Meanwhile, quickest of the ladies tackling Common Bank and Whitfield was Hannah Farran (Team Boompods) with a total time of 21-35.9 which was best by 24 seconds.
Richard Gildea (Didcot Phoenix CC) clocked 6-15.7 to win the 1st Chard Wheelers climb of Chineway Road near Ottery St Mary in Devon on Sunday morning, while that afternoon’s Mid-Devon CC two-stage saw him place second to 2015 national champion Richard Bussell (AeroCoach) on the Haytor climb.
And in the second Mid-Devon CC climb on Widdecombe, Miles Burton (Sixtysix RSN) took the win, with Gildea joint second with Cameron Biddle (Morvelo Basso) and Bussell down in sixth.
Reigning national champion Fiona Burnie (GS Metro) was quickest on the Widdecombe climb as well as the Haytor climb, as she prepared for her title defence in a few weeks time.
Jake Hollins (Bath CC) was quickest on the Chew Hill climb used by the Chew Valley CC, clocking 5-14.9 to win by around nine seconds from Jamie Atkins (73 Degrees Bicycles). Performance Cycles rider Joanne Jago was best female with 6-51.7.
And in Gloucestershire the Sodbury Cycle Sport climb of Severn Stoke was won by youngster Morgan Curle (Rogue Racing) in a time of 5-16.3 to win by 0.9 seconds from Phil Stonelake (Bristol RC), while Lauren Johnston (Avid Sport) was quickest female in 6-29.3.
