Photo: Charlie Quarterman and Joscelin Lowden were crowned winners at the National 10-Mile Championships in Cambridgeshire on Saturday, after posting impressive times in the title race near Six Mile Bottom.
Quarterman, the 20-year-old from Oxfordshire who was riding for Zappi’s RT, covered the E2/10 course in 18-14 to take the win by 12 seconds from National 25 champion Chris Fennell.
Meanwhile Lowden, the 31-year-old from Brighton who rides for The Independent Pedaler, posted a time of 19-42 to win by 19 seconds from defending champion Anna Turvey (Drag2zero).
“It was pretty tough on the way out and was a lot windier than I expected,” said Quarterman. “On the way back it wasn’t as fast or straight forward as I had hoped for and wasn’t the best day out.”
And Lowden said after her win: “I’m delighted and really pleased with my ride today,” said Lowden.
“I had no issues, good power and the conditions were just what I wanted. I had no expectations coming into the race as I hadn’t ridden my time trial bike since the end of June.”
The junior titles went to Thomas Day (Giant CC Halo Films) and Elynor Backstedt (Storey Racing).
Elsewhere, Adam Wild and Joanne Rea topped the podium at the Tyneside Vagabonds CC 100-mile time trial that took place near Pegswood in Northumberland on Sunday morning.
Wild (GS Metro) broke his own course record that he set in 2017 as he powered his way to victory in a time of 3-34-25.
And Rea (Blaydon CC) topped the podium in the women’s event after finishing her run with a time of 4-41-29 respectively.
Also in Cambridgeshire, Oscar Nilsson-Julien and Elspeth Grace topped the podium as the fastest male and female respectively at the Stevenage CC 25 near Guilden Morden on Saturday.
Nilsson-Julien (VC Londres) finished his run with a time of 52-19, while Grace (Cambridge University CC) topped the podium in the women’s event after finishing her run with a time of 1-07-13.
In Dorset, Matt Burden and Lou Dutch powered to convincing victories in the Poole Wheelers 25 near Lytchett Matravers on Sunday.
Burden clocked the winning time of 51-34, while in the women’s category Dutch crossed the line with a time of 1-00-35.
In hill-climbing, former national champion Dan Evans (ASSOS Equipe UK) was victorious in the Buxton CC climb on Long Hill near Whaley Bridge, while the Sitwell CC event at Ulley in South Yorkshire was won by Calum Brown (B38-Cycles in Motion) who led a 1-2-3 for his team with Andy Nichols second and Hamish Mcdougall third.
Earlier on Sunday, Nichols had got the better of Brown in the Bolsover and District CC climb of Villas Road in Derbyshire, while Sarah Lewthwaite (SportsLab) was quickest female there.
