Photo: Despite heavy rain forcing the postponement of the National 25-Mile Championships, there were still some excellent performances at a host of events across the country last weekend.
Chris Gibbard (Bynea CC) clocked 3-42-57 to win the West Wales Cyclists’ League 100-mile event near Llandovery on Sunday.
His time was 2-39 quicker than runner-up Pat Wright (Paceline RT), while the women’s prize went to Amanda Lane, the Bynea CC rider who clocked 4-45-30 to win by more than ten minutes.
Over the same distance Philip Graves (VC York) clocked 3-45-35 to win the Team Swift 100 in Yorkshire by almost 20 minutes from long distance legend Chris Hopkinson (Guernsey Velo), while Liz Ball (Valley Striders) was the pick of the women.
It was one of a trio of events run by Team Swift last weekend with a 50-mile and 12-hour option to pick from too.
While the 12-hour result is yet to come in, the 50-mile event was won by Tom Van Rossum (Jackpot Racing) in 1-49-28, with fastest female being Fiona Sharp (Team Swift) with 2-05-29.
The rain that forced the postponement of the National 25 did affect other events, and while most others did go ahead there were many non-starters.
That was the case in the Addiscombe CC 10, although it didn’t stop those that did ride from posting good times as the conditions improved.
Adam Bidwell (Kingston Wheelers) clocked 19-40 to win overall in a personal best time which was also an event record. Meanwhile, Charlotte Roberge (Dulwich Paragon CC) was fastest female in North Holmwood with 23-38.
In Devon Charlotte Marshall and Conrad Moss were victorious at the Plymouth Corinthian CC 50 on Sunday.
Marshall (RNRMCA) clocked 2-05-48 to finish as fastest female, while Conrad Moss (NOPINZ) was almost eight minutes quicker than his nearest rival with a time of 1-40-42.
Claire Harrison (Pro Vision Cycle Clothing) was best female while Ethan Hayter (VC Londres) set a new course record at the Seamons CC 25 on the J2/9 course in Cheshire on Saturday.
Hayter’s time of 49-48 defied the wet conditions and gave him the win by 1-18, while Harrison clocked 1-02-08 to be fastest woman by almost a minute.
In West Sussex, Howard Bayley stormed to a decisive victory as Karen McGrath found herself top of the pile in the women’s category in the Sussex Cycling Association’s 30 on Sunday.
Bayley (Blazing Saddles) covered the Steyning course in 1-04-34 to win by exactly two minutes, while McGrath (Worthing Excelsior) clocked 1-21-11.
John Mulvey and Sue Rust powered to 10-mile victories on the roads of Cambridgeshire in the open event promoted by Chronos RT on Saturday morning.
And in Warwickshire James Garrett (Rugby Velo) and Linda Hubbard (Welland Valley CC) were fastest male and female riders respectively at the Rugby RCC 10 on Saturday.
