Photo: Second in the opening round, Phil Williams (Liverpool Phoenix CC) went one better and took the win in round two of the Sigma Sports Classic Time Trial Series on Sunday, while Joscelin Lowden (The Independent Pedaler) was fastest female.
33-year-old Williams clocked 1-29-44 to take win the Beacon RCC event by 32 seconds and break the old course record by more than a minute over two laps of the Great Witley circuit in Worcestershire.
Round one winner Adam Wild (GS Metro) also broke the old course record with 1-30-16, but had to settle for second spot on this occasion.
31-year-old Lowden missed out on breaking Hayley Simmonds’ course record by around a minute, but still turned in an impressive performance to win by more than seven minutes with a time of 1-41-10.
“I did better than I expected,” said Williams. “It’s always hard with it being so hilly to judge it and get your pacing right, but I think I got it right and all my gear changes went well.”
“It would’ve been good to break Hayley’s record,” said Lowden. “I was just outside that, but I had a pretty good ride and I can’t really be disappointed with it.”
In other categories Arthur Boulton (Vision innovative Leisure) was fastest junior, Nicholas Fairfield (City RC Hull) was top paracyclist, and Danny Axford (Arctic Tacx) won the veterans category.
Elsewhere, South Wales continues to provide a host of fast times and personal best performances as Ogmore Valley Wheelers staged a 25-mile time trial on the R25/3h at Rhigos.
Chris Fennell (The Independent Pedaler) clocked 46-45 to win by more than a minute and a half from Jack Brown (ActiveEdge RT), while fastest woman was Emma Lewis (The Independent Pedaler) with 51-18, and juvenile Josh Tarling (Team Backstedt) was impressive with 50-47.
In North Yorkshire the Circuit of the Dales classic was staged by Nelson Wheelers over a 50-mile course, and it was Brian Fogarty (Fogarty’s Insurance Tri Team) who took the win. His time of 2-01-23 was just over two minutes faster than runner-up Andy Jackson (AeroCoach), while Rachel Hawker (Albarosa CC) was fastest of the women with 2-38-35.
The Kingston Phoenix RC 10 at North Holmwood in Surrey was won by Stuart Bettis (South Downs Bikes) in 21-27, with a3crg veteran Sarah Matthews clocking 24-03 to finish as fastest female.
In the North East, Keith Murray (Drag2zero) teamed up with his 16-year-old son Sam to win the Darlington CC two-up at East Cowton in North Yorkshire on Saturday, and then went on to win the Stockton Wheelers 23 in County Durham, despite falling off his bike in the last mile and limping home.
Richard Gildea and Rose McGovern were fastest male and female riders at the Oxonian CC 36-mile time trial near Charlbury in the Cotswolds on Sunday.
Riding for Cowley Road Condors, 29-year-old McGovern covered the two laps in 1-56-39, while Gildea clocked 1-24-54 to beat team-mate Henry Latimer into second.
Dean Robson (Northover VT) won the time trial bike category at the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 42-kilometre sporting event near Wool in Dorset, while Kirsty Mcseveney (a3crg) was fastest female, clocking 1-11-19 for 12th overall.
And in the road bike category Sam Wadsley (Primera TeamJobs) was quickest in 1-01-57, with IRIS Race Team’s Lizzy Stocker being quickest of the women in 1-15-52.
