Another weekend of snow blighted many time trials across the country, but a few hardy souls braved freezing temperatures and took part in five events dotted across the country on Saturday.

In Lancashire former national 25, 50 and 100-mile time trial champion Ryan Perry (Drag2zero) powered to a convincing victory in the West Pennine Road Club’s hilly 14-mile time trial near Knowle Green.

He clocked 28.05 for the testing course, and was 50 seconds clear of his nearest rival Fraser Martin (Saint Piran), while fastest female was Amy Gornall (Secret Training CC) who made no secret of her good form in clocking 33.15, more than a minute quicker than the next best woman.

On the other side of the country the West Suffolk Wheelers survived the snow to hold a 21-mile event near Risby in Suffolk.

Antony Birt, 43 and from Ipswich, covered the BS31 course in 53.10 to win by 20 seconds from Steve Cave (Plomesgate CC). Third was Team KTM UK’s Kieran Brady, who was another 12 seconds off the pace.

Fastest female was the promoting club’s Laura Brown, the 32-year-old from Bury St Edmunds who clocked 1-13-17. Having marshalled at the 2017 event, Brown rode some club events last season. However, this was her first ride in an open time trial.

In Surrey, Crawley Wheelers’ Mark Smith won the Southern Counties CU 10-mile event at Oakwood Hill in a time of 23.31, despite riding the final half mile with a flat front tyre.

Pat Wright (Paceline RT), winner of the of Kingston Wheelers 14 and South Downs Bikes 21, finished in second place in a time of 23.33, just two seconds off the winning pace. Liz Saul of London Dynamo was the fastest woman in 33.44.

Elsewhere, Luke Cornish and Anna Morris were fastest in the Sportzmad 10-mile event near Abergavenny, completing the course in 21.16.

The Cwmcarn Paragon RC rider finished fourth in the Port Talbot Wheelers two-up the previous weekend, and his good form continued with a solid ride.

In second place – and first female – was Southampton University Road Club rider Anna Morris in 22.15, just under a minute slower than Cornish.
