Photo: Angela Carpenter (a3crg) and Liam Maybank (Twickenham CC) were winners in the 54th East Surrey hardriders time trial staged by Dorking CC on a 29.9-mile course near Dawes Green in West Sussex on Sunday.
It was the second time in five years that 45-year-old Maybank has won the event, a victory which comes after he clocked 1:04.19 to take the win ahead of Pat Wright (Paceline RT), while Jack Rebours (Caesarean CC Jersey) was third.
And a3crg rider Carpenter, 49 and from Chichester, was the first woman home in 1:15:07 ahead of Mathilde Pauls (Twickenham CC) and Helen Gravatt (London Women's Racing CC).
Meanwhile in Suffolk Leon West (CC Sudbury) and multiple national champion Hayley Simmonds (Team WNT Pro Cycling) were fastest male and female riders respectively as CC Sudbury staged their annual 22-mile Mad March hilly time trial.
West clocked 50.23, beating his 2017 time in the same event by 38 seconds and giving him the win by just three seconds from veteran Stuart Fairweather, the Team Velovelocity rider who had to settle for second once again.
Third overall and fastest female was multiple national record holder and national champion Hayley Simmonds (Team WNT Pro Cycling) who clocked 50.52, making her the fastest female by a staggering 7-25 with the promoting club’s Mandy Bunn (CC Sudbury) taking second.
In North Yorkshire, Peter Boyes (TS Racing Team-OTR) was the winner of the Cleveland Wheelers 21 near Stokesley in a time of 45.39, with Steve Gibson (Peak Road Club) just 28 seconds slower in second.
Fastest female was York Triathlon rider Becky Penty with 58.33, around two and a half minutes quicker than her nearest rival Gemma Pearson (Cleveland Wheelers).
The previous day, Richard Bideau had raced to victory in the Pendle Forest CC Circuit of Ingleborough in North Yorkshire, clocking 1-03-13 to win by just over two minutes from Preston CC’s Matt Moorhouse.
And the women’s prize went to Karen Poole (Sportstest RT) who covered the 27-mile course near Ingleton in 1-21-13.
Course record holder James Gullen, the JLT Condor pro from Leeds who now lives in Lancaster, had entered and was expected to make another challenge for the course record he set in 2017. However, he was struck down with a virus in the week leading up to the event, and chose not to ride this time.
In Somerset, Joanne Jago (Performance Cycles) and David Janes (Wheels of Dorset-Aero Testing) were victorious at Gillingham and District Wheelers staged their hardriders 19-mile time trial.
Janes, the 36-year-old from Wiltshire, clocked 38.31 to take the win by 24 seconds from Jack Rebours (Caesarean CC Jersey) the young rider who won last season’s Knight Composites Classic Time Trial Series.
Jago, the 37-year-old from Bristol, covered the U303 course near Bruton in 45.57 giving her victory by almost three minutes from Jenny Lee (Yeovil CC).
In East Yorkshire the promoting club’s Richard Peel and Hannah Bayes (LIV AWOL) were fastest male and female at the Malton Wheelers 10.5-mile time trial in East Yorkshire.
And there was a win for Simon Beldon (Team Bottrill-Vanguard) in the Yorkshire CF 10 on Sunday, covering the V910 at Brotherton in 20-53. Fastest female was Fiona Sharp (Team Swift) in 24-48.
