Photo: David Ross (LFGSS Cycling Club) won both stages of Brighton Mitre CC’s hill climbs on Saturday, powering to victory on both Steyning Bostal and Mill Hill in Sussex.
Following on from his victory in the previous weekend’s Kingston Wheelers climb, Ross – who rides for the London Fixed Gear and Single Speed CC – clocked a time of 4-12.8 for the 1,704-yard climb of Bostal Road in the morning, giving him the win by 21 seconds from East Grinstead CC’s Nick Martin.
And then in the afternoon Ross was victorious again, this time covering the 4,682-yard Mill Hill in 7-31.6 to once again get the better of Nick Martin by 37 seconds.
Elsewhere, Team B38-Underpin Racing were celebrating a one-two in the Tickhill Velo climb of Brookhouse Carr in South Yorkshire on Sunday.
Calum Brown clocked 1-01.4 to take the win by seven seconds from team-mate Andy Nichols, while the fastest of the female riders was Emilie Verroken (Maxx RT) with 1-29.3.
Brown and Nichols then headed into Derbyshire for the Bolsover and District CC climb at Palterton – but they were denied a double victory.
Reigning national champion Adam Kenway (Raleigh GAC) continued his build-up to the 2017 title race in three weeks with victory in the Bolsover and District CC event.
His time of 2-56.1 was good enough for victory by 16 seconds from Nichols and Brown, while the fastest female was Alex Deck (Rutland CC) with 4-16.7.
In Wiltshire, in-form Woolwich CC rider James Hayward chalked up another win, this time in the Chippenham and District Wheelers climb of Bowden Hill near Lacock.
The 37-year-old covered the two-kilometre course in 4-29.0 to win by five seconds from Jacob Pilkington (VC Montpelier), while Hannah Slade (Chippenham & Dist Wh) was fastest female with 5-12.0.
Hayward has now topped the standings in each of his last four events, with wins at the Wigmore CC, Stocksbridge CC and Reading CC 2-stage climbs to his name.
In Yorkshire, Welsh champion Dan Evans was quickest over two stages in Otley CC’s event near Otley on Saturday, adding yet another win to his tally.
The 2014 National Hill Climb champion was too quick for the rest of the field, completing the Guise Cliff climb in 3.23.4 and the Norwood in 4.51.6 to make a combined time of 8.15.
He was pushed close by Kieran Savage (Team B38 - Underpin Racing) who put down times of 3.25 and 4.56 to total 8.21, six seconds off his ASSOS Equipe UK opponent.
GS Metro’s Fiona Burnie was top woman, her times of 4.32.7 and 6.28.4 giving her a time of 11.01.1 while Jessica Evans of ASSOS Equipe UK was second.
In time trialling, Rachael Elliott (Drag2Zero) broke her own national competition record for 30 miles in the Leo RC 30-mile time trial on the E2 course near Newmarket in Cambridgeshire on Saturday afternoon.
Elliott’s time of 1:00.34 sliced almost three minutes of her own two-year-old record, bringing the hour mark tantalisingly close for the future.
Matthew Smith (Team Bottrill-HSS Hire) clocked 56.04 to win the overall event which saw heavy rain towards the end.
And in the Southdown Velo 28, victory went to Chris McNamara (Nuun-Sigma Sport) and Angela Carpenter (a3crg) on the P911 Goodwood circuit on Sunday morning.
42-year-old McNamara clocked 1-04-32 to win by more than a minute, while Carpenter covered the course in 1-18-35 to win that category by an impressive six minutes.
