Photo: After losing his crown in 2016, Dan Evans (ASSOS Equipe UK) retook the Welsh hill-climb championship title in Snowdonia on Sunday, while his wife Jessica Evans (ASSOS Equipe UK) successfully defended her title in the women’s event.
Colwyn Bay-based Dan Evans, 36, clocked 10.12 for the Llanberis Pass climb in Gwynedd to take his fifth Welsh title and win by 41 seconds from espoir Kieran Wynne-Catrtanach (Maxxis 4 RT), while Mike Morris (NFTO) was third.
Wife Jessica Evans notched up her fourth Welsh title in a row, covering the course in 13.38 to win by 15 seconds from Claire Swoboda (Chorlton Velo).
Elsewhere, Andy Cunningham (All Terrain Cycles) and Alexandra Kendall-Smith (Univ of Manchester CC) were the winners at Weaver Valley CC’s Brickworks climb near Bollington in Cheshire.
While Leon Wright (Race Hub) finished second, reigning national champion Adam Kenway had to settle for third.
Woolwich CC’s James Hayward won overall at the Reading CC two-stage climb at Goring and Streatley in Oxfordshire.
He was beaten by Richard Gildea (Didcot Phoenix) on the opening stage, but hit back in the second climb to win overall by six seconds.
Third last year, Calum Brown (B38 Underpin Racing) moved up to win the Bolsover and District Wheelers evening climb near Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire on Sunday. He took two seconds from the course record of Adam Kenway (Raleigh GAC) who had to settle for second on the day.
Brown’s girlfriend Rebecca Goodson (Velo Schils-Interbike) was fastest woman with 1-49.
GS Metro were celebrating a double win in the Allen Valley Velo two-stage hill-climb in Northumberland, with Zeb Kyffin and Fiona Burnie being fastest male and female riders respectively.
Kyffin won both stages and was 57 seconds clear of his nearest rival overall, while Burnie won by more than three minutes.
And in Bedfordshire, Josh Curtis was quickest up Bison Hill near Whipsnade on Sunday as he won the Lovelo Cinelli climb.
Riding for the promoting club, 19-year-old Curtis clocked 2-36 to win by eight seconds from Calvin Cheung (Hub Velo).
Meanwhile, National 12-hour champion and competition record holder Alice Lethbridge (Drag2zero) was fastest female in 3-15, winning by two seconds from Jacintha Hamilton-Love (Dulwich Paragon).
