Photo: Hayley Simmonds secured her fourth national title of the season so far at Saturday’s National 10-Mile Championships in Dorset, while junior champions were also crowned.
Jamie Whitcher (Bournemouth Cycleworks - Vitec Fire - Ford Civil – Trek) and Amber Junker Brameld (VC de Londres) won the boys’ and girls’ junior events respectively at the RTTC National 10 Mile Championship.
Whitcher used his local knowledge of the Dorset area to clock a winning time of 21 minutes and 14 seconds to clinch his first national open time trial title.
Similarly, Junker Brameld also took her maiden open national title in the girls’ event covering the course in a time of 26-13.
But Simmonds led the way on Saturday, clocking an impressive 22-35 to take the women’s title.
“It was really good on a really fun course,” said Simmonds. “It was quite windy but otherwise it was dry which was quite lucky for that course because otherwise I think it might have been a bit difficult if it had been wet.”
Timing issues meant that a result from Sunday’s men’s championship has yet to be announced.
In North Yorkshire there was a deserved victory for Ben Stead (3RT) in the Circuit of Ingleborough, promoted by Pendle Forest Cc on the classic 26.2-mile course.
The 38-year-old took the win in a time of 1-00-59, nearly three minutes quicker than his nearest rival. And top female was Joanna Cebrat (Bury Clarion) with 1-20-09.
Elsewhere the hill-climb season continued to see gravity defying feats, with reigning women’s national champion Bithja Jones breaking the women’s course record for Holybourne Hill in the CC Basingstoke climb.
She clocked 4-02.1 to take her second course record in as many weeks, while Darren Kidson (Onyx RT) was fastest male in 3-37.4 to make it two wins in two weekends for him.
On Gribdale Moor near Kildale, Jacob Vezey (Harrogate Nova CC) was victorious in 3-05.3, 11 seconds faster than his nearest rival Mary Wilkinson (Yorkshire Road Club), who was second overall and fastest female in 3-16.2 in the AIMS Cycling event.
In Northumberland, Muckle Cycling Club secured a one-two in the North Tyneside Riders hill-climb on Winter’s Gibbett, with John Bowman taking the win and Matthew Smith second spot.
Blaydon CC’s Sarah Wilkinson was quickest of the women, her time of 9-15.1 being around 11 seconds better than runner-up Ellen Powell (Durham Tri Club) for the 2.2-mile climb.
Bowman stormed up the hill in 7-24.1 to take the win by an impressive 21.9 seconds.
Hartside Moor in Cumbria provided the venue for the Border City Wheelers climb on Sunday, where Ed Laverack (Backpedal) was a convincing winner by 30 seconds with his time of 16.46, winning from Patrick Clark (Team Lifting Gear Products).
Rebecca Richardson (Brother UK) was quickest of the women in 20-09 which was good enough for tenth overall.
Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire provided an impressive backdrop for the Bolsover and District CC climb, which was won by Andy Nichols (Team Lifting Gear Products) in 1-21, three seconds better than Gregg Booker (Matlock CC), while quickest of the women was Zoe Langham (Beeston CC) in 1-50, seven seconds clear of Emilie Verroken (Team Lifting Gear Products).
