Ben Goodwin (Fibrax Wrexham RC) recorded his second open victory of the season by winning the Velotik RT 15, while Deb Hutson-Lumb won the women’s event.

Goodwin, aged 25, recorded a winning time of 31 minutes and 55 seconds over the 15-mile course in Shropshire.

The D315/1 sees riders start near Tern Hill before heading down the A53 towards Shawbury for the opening 6.5 miles.

Competitors then turned onto an unclassified road before heading back north on A442 past Hodnet Heath and then re-joining the A53 and finishing near Hodnet.

Early morning light rain cleared for the later starters, but riders still had to wrap up against a cold temperature.

Goodwin, from Wrexham, also won the Bridgnorth CC Hilly 21 last weekend and showed his form again recording an average speed of over 28.19 miles per hour.

Dean Callister (Revolutions Racing) took second in a time of 32-26 while a close battle for third developed.

Deb Hutson-Lumb

Jonathan Mills-Keeling (Bridgnorth Cycling Club) recorded a time of 33-27 which was good enough for third just three seconds faster than team-mate Tim Beardmore.

“I didn’t have super high expectations as I felt a bit unwell the morning of the race so mostly just didn’t want to explode,” said Goodwin.

“I mostly wanted to do the event as the organiser Toby is a good mate and was raising money for North West Air Ambulance.

“That’s my first ever 15. I do prefer to go for non standard courses to keep things interesting. I prefer to pick hilly courses when they’re on.

“I’m looking to build up the distance a bit in the coming months with 50’s and 100’s in preparation for the 24-hour this year.”

Quickest para-cyclist was Archie Atkinson (Para-T) whose time of 37-26 was good enough for 18th position overall.

In the women’s event Hutson-Lumb took victory on her first open outing of the season stopping the clock in 38-18.

Fellow veteran Sally Cunliffe (Ruthin Cycling Club / Clwb Seiclo Rhuthun) was second woman in 40-27 beating Helen Tudor (Oswestry Paragon CC) by just seven seconds (40-34).
