Junior rider Joshua Tarling (Flanders Color Galloo Team) showed his talent once again by charging to victory in the Hemel Hempstead 10, while Sally Turner (trainSharp) snatched the women’s win by three seconds.

Tarling, aged 18, set a new 10-mile open time trial personal best time of 18 minutes and eight seconds to take victory by 10 seconds.

The youngster, from Aberaeron, was taking part in his first open of the season amid a busy international road and track racing calendar.

The F11/10 saw riders compete on the A41 starting outside Tring and then out towards Hemel Hempstead before turning back towards Aylesbury before the final leg towards the finish.

The weather was not ideal for the course, with a nagging northerly wind making it hard on the downhill section, blunting the top speeds normally found on the course, and it was on and off light drizzle for some of the first half of the field too.

Fortunately, the heavier rain had fallen a couple of hours earlier which had largely dried to leave damp roads.

However, the less than perfect conditions still resulted in a large number of personal bests.

Tarling, who also won the National Circuit Championship for juniors last season, set a time of 18-08 which is the second fastest ever recorded by a junior over 10 miles with an average speed of over 33 miles per hour.

Also setting a personal best time was Alex Pritchard (WattShop) but his new benchmark of 18-18 was only good enough for second.

Quickest veteran on scratch Richard Oakes (Team Ohten Aveas) continued his impressive season with a third placed finish in 18-38.

Not to be outdone Finlay Tarling (Flanders Color Galloo Team) was fastest juvenile in fourth clocking 18-57 which was just two seconds slower than his brother’s 10-mile juvenile competition record of 18-55.

The fastest Team was Bedfordshire Roads RT consisting of Matt Donovan, Ian Woodcock and Peter Shaw with an aggregate time of 1-02-05.

In the women’s event veteran rider Turner recorded a winning time of 20 minutes and 45 seconds with an average speed of over 28.9 miles per hour.

The 42-year-old finished second in the ECCA 50 on her last outing but returned to the top podium position this time out.

After finishing sixth in last weekend’s women’s National 25-mile championship Anastasia Bowler (AS Test Team) set a personal best time of 20-48 on her way to second.

Completing the podium positions was Lilly Chant (Southampton Uni RCC) who completed the course in 21-04.
