Wake and McMahon charge to victory in Veloculture 13
In-form Lewis Wake (Team Kirkley Cycles) set a new course record on his way to victory in the Veloculture 13-mile time trial, while Jen McMahon (Sub Rosa) won the women’s event.
“I’m extremely pleased to take the win at this event and get the course record, which was a nice bonus!” Wake said after setting a course record of 27 minutes and 2 seconds, beating the previous best mark of 27-04 set in 2018.
The 25-year-old won back-to-back events for the first time this season after winning the Tyneside Vagabonds Mountain Time Trial last weekend.
“With not having the chance to race here last year due to Covid, it’s good to be back on this sporting course which I’ve always liked,” added Wake. “I tend not to ride the roads this far north so it’s a really nice change, even with the course being quite technical.”
Riders were greeted with a thick mist to start the morning for Saturday’s event, and it didn’t pass until the last rider had crossed the line. As well as the conditions being difficult there was also bank holiday traffic to consider, with a number of riders held up on the run to the finish.
The men’s podium consisted of Lewis Wake, Lewis Timmins (Vector Racing), Adam Smith (Team Kirkley Cycles). Timmins finished in 27:15, whilst Smith crossed the finish line 19 seconds later with a time of 27:36.
Philip Kennell (GS Metro) finished just outside of podium in 28.15, making him fourth overall and fastest veteran.
Juvenile rider Joe Dixon (Velo Culture) continued to improve as he finished tenth with a time 29:02.
Also claiming back-to-back wins after Tyneside Vagabonds last week, McMahon continued to impress, finishing in 32:05.
McMahon’s time of 32:05 was the fastest among the 21 women that participated in the popular event. Sarah Wilkinson (Blaydon CC) and Vicky Gibbs (Reifen Racing) finish off the podium, clocking in at 32:38 and 33:21 respectively.
Wilkinson as well as confirming a podium finish, was also the fastest veteran on the day.
