Professional rider Harry Tanfield (AG2R La Mondiale) showed his class to take a course record despite difficult conditions in the Lea Valley Crescent 30, while Lisa Hurrell (Maldon and District CC) was a convincing victor in the women’s event.

Tanfield, aged 25, from Middlesbrough, took his third open victory of the season by over two-and-a-half minutes.

The E1/30 saw riders start north of Bentfield and head north westerly into a testing headwind on the B1383 before taking in several roundabouts before joining the A1301 and then a welcome turn west onto the A505 to the turn at the M11 roundabout.

The historic Crescent 30 was run off in conditions which less than ideal, with a harsh and chilly wind testing the riders on the way out before having the wind advantage on the climb back up to the finish.

Among the early starters were John Calvert (Walden Velo) who clocked a respectable 1-16-41 but more importantly notified organised of unplanned roadworks and negotiated with the workers to clear the road ready for the event.

First seeded rider James Jenkins (Richardsons-Trek RT) set an early time to beat of 1-03-09 which stood the test of time as his rivals finished.

However, Tanfield who has already won the Darlington 25 and Cleveland Whls 25 on a sporting course this season was in emphatic form.

Despite the tough conditions and being stuck in traffic on one roundabout Tanfield knocked a minute off the previous course record on the undulating course setting a new mark of 1-00-30.

Jenkins was a clear second place while David Harding (Chelmer CC) finished third clocking 1-05-42.

Last woman off Hurrell was in dominant form clocking a winning time of 1-21-06 which was over 10 minutes quicker than Emma Flin (Shaftesbury CC) in 1-31-55.

The tandem prize was taken, not for the first time, by the Team Vision Racing-Silverhook pair of John Iszaat and Dean Lubin in 1-10-49.
