 Jonathan Wears

Jonathan Wears powered to victory in new course record time for the F2a/25 course on Sunday, with Ann Shuttleworth taking the women’s prize.

Foggy conditions meant that proceedings did not get underway at the scheduled 9am start time. However. rather than cancel the event the decision was taken for the event to be delayed and despite some riders electing not to take on the conditions, Wears was not one of them.

The SSLL Racing Team rider blitzed the Cambridgeshire course in 48.45, setting a new course record by over a minute and winning the event by one minute thirty-five seconds.

It was a fine display from Wears, 24, backing up his triumph at the Seacroft Wheelers event over the same distance a fortnight ago.

Just eleven seconds separated the next two riders, David McGaw taking the honours for host club Cambridge CC in 50.20 to finish as the day’s highest placed veteran with Simon Hance (Ipswich CC) finishing third in 50.31.

In the women’s competition, Ann Shuttleworth came out on top clocking exactly one hour for her 25 miles.

The Chelmer CC veteran’s effort was good enough for a comfortable winning margin in excess of four minutes over her nearest challenger, Karen Dennett of Bishop Stortford CC.

Shuttleworth was back onto the top step of the podium after a couple of other top three finishes in August, at the Spoco SC 10 and the Kings Lynn CC 25.
