Jamie Whitcher made it four consecutive wins with victory in the open category at the a3crg Goodwood Closed Circuit Time Trial League 10-mile time trial on Wednesday evening, with Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey winning the female event.

Riding for Embark Spirit BSS, Witcher won by almost two minutes in 18-33, seeing off the challenge of runner-up Bobby Buenfeld (Velo Club Venta) who set 20-32, while Sigma Sports Race Team’s Simon McNamara was just two seconds back and took third place in 20-34.

On his win, Whitcher said: “I thought it was going to be a fast and warm evening, but it definitely wasn't. It got cold very quickly and got colder as I was going along so conditions definitely weren't as fast as I'd hope.

“But given the weather I'm pretty happy with the time and very good to know that I could go a lot faster on the right day!”

In the women’s event, five-time Paralympic champion Storey (Storey Racing) clocked 21-51 to win ahead promoting club pair Sarah Matthews and Ruth Whiddett, who set 24-32 and 25-11 respectively, with Whiddett also fastest female road bike.

The team prize went to Velo Club Venta trio Bobby Buenfeld, Alexander Murphy and Hamish Hunter in 1:02-17 cumulatively, with Robin Kirk (VC Godalming & Haslemere) the quickest open road bike in 22-02.

In the youth events, Oscar Northover (Southborough & Dist Wh) set 22-06 as fastest in the 8-13 category over 7.6 miles, with Roch Morgan (Derby Mercury RC) quickest in the 12-15 10-mile group in 22-19.

Anna Fraser (CC Ashwell) and Mark Fraser (Full Moo Cycling) were quickest tandem in 26-07.

With 110 riders on the start sheet this was the best numbers so far in the South DC area which shows the Goodwood circuit hasn’t lost its appeal. With the Closed-Circuit Championships moving to Goodwood this year (11th August) there is increased interest in the evening events at the venue.

This event, held on course P917/10, sees riders complete four and a half clockwise laps of Goodwood racing circuit.
