Paul Pardoe.

Paul Pardoe picked up his second win of the season with success in the open category at the Leo 30 and VTTA National 30-Mile Championships, while victory in the women’s event went to Hayley Simmonds.

Riding for Peterborough CC, Pardoe finished quickest in 1:02-58 to see off competition from DRAG2ZERO rider Matthew Smith who clocked 1:03-17 to seal the runners-up spot while a time of 1:04-53 helped Rose Race Team’s Jack Levick to the final spot on the podium.

On his win, Pardoe said: “I'm over the moon to have won the Leo 30 and get my name on such an illustrious and storied trophy alongside so many great riders!

“I'd really enjoyed the event on the E33 course last year, where I was third fastest overall, so was looking forward to the event and hoping to go well.

“With the other super strong riders like Matt and Jack on the start sheet I knew just being on the podium again would take a strong ride, so really pleased to have hooked it all up yesterday for the win.

“Conditions were very warm with a strong-ish cross-head and head wind on two of the legs and a good push on the back stretch, so it was a case of pushing on at the right points and recovering a little at others while trying not to overheat.

“I felt pretty good still coming into the last five or six miles so pushed on as hard as could I and was able to finish strong.”

In the women’s category, Simmonds (Doltcini O’Shea Cycle Division) set an unbeaten time of 1:12-52 to take the crown as fastest female, ahead of Linda Dewhurst (Ride Revolution Coaching) in 1:14-26 and Deborah Moss (Springfield Financial Racing Team) in 1:14-31, who were second and third respectively.

In the tandem category, Newmarket Cycling & Triathlon Club pair David Cheshire and Rob Boyle took the honours in 1:12-01, ahead of Shaun Williams (Abellio - SFA Racing Team) and Anthony Bell (San Fairy Ann CC) in 1:17-01.

On Men’s Age Adjusted Time, Mick Stevens topped the rankings in 1:01-20, ahead of Smith in 1:02-17, and Pardoe third in 1:02-32.

Quickest overall on age Adjusted Time was Dewhurst in 58-50, while Legato Racing Team trio Joseph Costello, Simon Horsley Mark Hamer won the Age Adjusted Time team prize in 3;10-53.

Riders enjoyed warm and sunny weather conditions at 23 degrees, while there was a nasty wind that made the leg from Dursley Corner to Six Mile Bottom difficult.

This event, held on course E33/30, is a triangular circuit that starts on the A1304 and heads northwest to Newmarket roundabout, where riders turn east on the A1303, heading past Bottisham and turning at Dursley Corner to complete the penultimate leg past Little Wilbraham and down to Six Mile Bottom before heading northwest to finish by the start line on the A1304.
