John Archibald

John Archibald (HUUB WattShop) took victory by over two-and-a-half minutes in round four of the CTT Classic Series hosted by Edinburgh Road Club, while road bike competitor Sarah Scott (Torvelo Racing) was the quickest woman overall.

In the other categories Chris Smart (GTR - Return to Life p/b Streamline) was the quickest veteran, Scott Hunter (Berwick Wheelers) was fastest in the open road bike category and Jacob Bradbury (Manchester Wheelers) finished best junior.

The Tour of the Meldons event saw riders complete a 22-mile loop over a scenic course on the Meldon hills.

The event is a classic on the Scottish calendar with a history dating back to the 1930s.

The 22-mile course includes two main climbs with the first Shiplaw climb coming after four miles heading towards Whim and the second in the Meldons coming after over 16 miles had been covered.

Archibald had won all of his three open time trial events so far this season coming into the event and continued his faultless record on this occasion.

The HUUB WattShop set a new course record over the 22-mile distance of 46 minutes and a single second.

Adam Wild (GS Metro) was competing in his first open time trial for almost three years and placed second in 48-38.

After winning two of the opening three CTT Classic Series rounds Ben Goodwin (Fibrax Fenwicks Wrexham RC) continued his pursuit of overall honours placing third in 50-06.

“It was a good day really,” said Archibald. “There were wet roads on the course, it rained all morning but was dry for the actual race.

“There was two technical climbs and descents but aside from that it was very flat and fast, so it had a bit of everything really.

“The surface is very changeable, so you have to be vigilant in what you’re doing. It is a nice course.

“It keeps you engaged, you can’t really afford to lose concentration and there’s always something to be thinking about.

“It felt good, I enjoyed it and I wouldn’t have really changed much.”

Archibald is targeting national honours later this season over the set distance competitions.

The quickest woman was road bike competitor Sarah Scott (Torvelo Racing) who stopped the clock in a winning time of 1-05-43.

Just eight seconds behind Scott was quickest time trial competitor Evgeniya Righini-Brand (Spalding CC) in 1-05-51.

The battle for third was also a close one with road bike competitor Alice Larkin (High Peak Cycles RT) stopping the clock in 1-07-19 which was 27 seconds quicker than Jude Paterson (RT 23) in 1-07-46.

The veteran’s category was dominated by quickest team GTR - Return to Life p/b Streamline who took all of the top three podium positions.

Chris Smart was fastest in the category in 50-11 which was two seconds quicker than Ray Wilson, while Marc Anderson finished third (51-49).

Sophie Heighton

Wilson was also best veteran rider on age adjusted time with his time equating to +8.06.

The junior time trial category was also closely fought as Jacob Bradbury (Manchester Wheelers) went quickest in 1-00-05 which was 34 seconds faster than Johnny McMurdo (Peebles CC).

Taking part in his first open event on a road bike Scott Hunter (Berwick Wheelers) took category victory stopping the clock in 1-00-20.

Finished second in the category was Alex Paterson (Ayr Burners Cycling) in 1-00-56, while James Duncan (Pentland Velo) placed third (1-01-32).

Sophie Heighton (Ferryhill Wheelers) was the only junior in the road bike category winning the girls’ event in 1-17-25.
