Chris Smart secured win number six for the season, while Elizabeth Wisdish was quickest female in the VC Glasgow 10-mile time trial near Newton Mearns in East Renfrewshire on Saturday morning.

Smart, 42 and riding for GTR-Return to Life p/b Streamline, covered the course in 21-00 to take the win 1-08 ahead of junior Corey Whiteford (Lanark Race Team), while third was Dom James (Fusion Tri Club) with 22-21.

Wisdish (Glasgow Wheelers) clocked 27-14 to take the women’s category win by just 18 seconds from Dooleys RT rival Valerie Martin, with third being Deirdre O’Reilly (Lanark Race Team) with 28-22.

The event on the WW10/02 course used the A77 course south of Glasgow, and is more undulating than many courses adding an extra dimension. It was postponed from seven days earlier because of resurfacing works, and the wait was apparently worth it with a significantly improved surface.

Conditions were also more favourable with only a light south easterly breeze.

“It’s a super hard course where the rough bits have recently been resurfaced so was a pleasure to ride today, but it never gets any easier though,” said Smart.

“It was a good day out for GTR with Joe Hands one second off his first ever podium.

“My next race will be the National 50 next month. I was tenth two years ago and fifth last year, so anything better than that is my target.”

Smart last won this event in 2019 and despite being marginally slower he repeated the victory. This adds to his recent victories at the Scottish District 50-Mile Championship three weeks ago staged by Fife Century RC, as well as being fastest veteran at round four of the Merlin Cycles Classic Series, the Tour of the Meldons, in April.

He was next due to be in action tomorrow in the North Tyneside Riders 50-mile event in Northumberland but can’t make it now, so his next open ride will be the National 50-Mile Championship in Essex on July 2.

For Wisdish her victory here comes after placing second in the Royal Albert CC 10 in April, as well as being part of the first all-female team at the GTR Return to Life 10 in March alongside Patricia Baird.

The event was also a qualifier for the National Youth Championship, with Kieran Grant (VC Glasgow South) clocking 36-10 to take the win.
