Jamie Philpott (Wahoo Le Col) smashed the course record on his way to winning the Allen Valley Velo hill climb event on Allendale, while Hannah Farran (Team Boompods) was also pushed close in the women’s event.

Philpott, aged 25, posted a winning time of 10 minutes and 40 seconds over the 2.43-mile climb in Northumberland – taking 21 seconds off the former course record.

Starting at Thornley Gate the event started at a shallow gradient before rising through the trees at about a 7% gradient.

Once the course opened into exposed moorland competitors also had to battle against a tough headwind to the finish.

Philpott finished fourth in his first open hill climb earlier this month at the Buxton CC/Sett Valley Cycles event on Bunsall Cob.

He was not to be denied this time out finishing a single second ahead of Iain Duffield (PMRR) who stopped the clock in 10-41.

Completing the men’s podium positions was Alexander Storey (GS Metro) who recorded a time of 11-14.

“It was a really good race,” said Philpott. “At the top once you left the trees it was a pretty brutal headwind.

“It’s my first season doing hill climbs since I’ve come from triathlons. I fancied a change and did a few hill climbs in BUCS events and really enjoyed them.

“With the National Championships being on the Struggle, a long climb I thought it would be good. The win has definitely given me a confidence boost. I broke my wrist earlier this season and I’ve not been going well since.

“It was a really good climb and on a less windy day it would be a good one to get into a rhythm on.”

Colin Atkinson (Muckle Cycle Club) was the quickest veteran rider with his time of 11-53 which was good enough for seventh overall.

Meanwhile, the quickest junior competitor was Charlie Thew (Racing Metro 15) who stopped the clock in 13-16.

In the women’s event Farran won her fourth hill climb from as many events so far this season.

The 29-year-old posted a time of 13 minutes and 59 seconds which was just three seconds quicker than veteran Sarah Wilkinson (Blaydon CC).
