Jarvis and Wake take wins at Team Kirkley Cycles 10
Lois Jarvis (Muckle CC) and Lewis Wake (Team Kirkley Cycles) battled through wet conditions to finish as fastest female and male riders as Team Kirkley Cycles staged a 10-mile time trial in Northumberland on Saturday.
Jarvis clocked 25-43 to finish as fastest female on a time trial machine by more than a minute, although there was a much smaller gap between second and third with Adele McAleer (Velo Culture) clocking 26-55 for second and Jen McMahon (Jadan Vive le Velo) two seconds further back in third.
Wake was fastest overall in a time of 21-19, giving him the win by 22 seconds from Muckle CC rival Alexander Milne, while Nick Badcock of Allen Valley Velo was third, 1-12 behind Wake’s pace.
The event used the M105 course near Ponteland, and after a fine week prior to race day the weather turned and it was wet and cold as riders prepared.
“I’m really happy with my performance today and to win my own team’s event,” said Wake afterwards. “There was a fair bit of lying water which made the first half of the course a bit difficult to navigate at times. I’m glad everyone made it around safely!”
And Jarvis had similar thoughts, adding: “I’m really pleased to get the win. The conditions were grim with a lot of water and mud on the course, but as always, a great event hosted by Team Kirkley Cycles.”
In other categories Simon Crisp (Gosforth RC) and Teri Bayliss (Reifen Racing) were quickest male and female riders on road bikes with 24-31 for Crisp and 27-59 for Bayliss.
Velo Culture’s Harris Hall covered the course in 22-50 for sixth overall and was the fastest junior, while top juvenile was Mason Bulfin (Manilla Cycling) with 26-41.
There were several first timers giving time trialling a go, and of them the fastest were Edryd Jones (Sun City Tri) and Bella Butler (AWOL O’Shea Worx) who clocked 26-46 and 29-15 respectively, Butler having competed on a road bike.
Lewis Wake’s overall win was his second of the season so far having won the North Tyneside Riders’ 10-mile event two weeks earlier, and he was second in the Barnesbury CC 21-mile event on April 1.
His victory in the 2023 edition of the Team Kirkley Cycles saw him stop the clock four seconds slower than when he last rode the event in 2021 but that was only good enough for fourth.
