David Williams (Velotik Racing Team) beat his team-mate David Parkin to victory by just four seconds at the Manchester and District TTA 50-mile time trial in Cheshire on Saturday, while Alice Taylor (Congleton CC-MyWindsock) was fastest female.

Williams clocked 1-47-22 to win the event narrowly from Parkin, while third was Manchester Bicycle Club’s Alex Royle with 1-48-23.

Meanwhile Alice Taylor was fastest female, won the handicap prize, and led Congleton CC to the women’s team award too. She clocked 2-03-29 which was almost four minutes better than her Spindata prediction.

Second fastest female was Jasmine Holmes (Army Cycling) who was over five minutes back with 2-08-42, while third was Joanna Cebrat (360cycling), just ten seconds further off the pace.

Good conditions meant times generally were up on predictions, and many riders set new personal bests.

“I’m really happy as I didn't expect to win,” said Williams. “It was a really good field with my two team-mates Dave Parkin and Toby Williams as well as Alex Royle and Tom Thornley.

“I have a soft spot for this course as last time I raced it last year in the Congleton 50 I won also when not expecting to.

“I knew from looking at the wind conditions it was going to be quick in certain sections but a slog on others,” said Williams. “It was just a case of pacing to what I knew and not think about other riders. It was also humid so fuelling was definitely essential too.

“I knew I was on for a good time when catching Alex on the last lap to my surprise and even more surprised to take the win when I got back to HQ.”

The event used the J4/9 course, with riders completing almost four laps of a circuit from Byley, out to Cranage, up through Lach Dennis and on to Rudheath, before heading back south to Middlewich then back to Byley.

Taylor was best on handicap with an adjusted time of 1-34-27, while David Williams was best veteran on age adjusted time with 1-45-50.

Williams, too, was victorious in the team category with Velotik’s trio being him, David Parkin, and Toby Williams who was sixth overall.

In the women’s two-rider team category, Congleton took the win as Taylor was joined by Claire Harrison with 2-10-29 for fourth overall in the female category.
