Mark Wolstenholme

Second in the same event last year, in-form Mark Wolstenholme went one better this year, taking victory in the East Bradford CC 15-mile time trial on Sunday in a time of 32-33 to leave Team Bottrill’s Stuart Henderson second by 24 seconds in North Yorkshire.

Meanwhile, Darlington CC’s Jo Scott was fastest female in 44-34, and therefore received the Yorkshire LCA 15-Mile Trophy from Brenda Littlefair, who won the same trophy 50 years ago in 1973.

Scott’s time was 1-11 better than Suzy Noon (Queensbury Queens of the Mountain CC), with her team-mate Julia Parr being third fastest female in 49-11.

Otley CC’s Matt Asquith was fifth last year but completed the men’s podium, taking third place with his time of 34-08 which was just five seconds better than his time in the same event in 2022.

The event attracted a good field of 34 riders for a 15-mile distance, and there was a headwind on the homeward leg. Despite being dry, it was a bit chillier than forecast meaning Adam Duggleby’s six-year-old course record of 30-17 survived once again.

The event was on the V221 course which largely uses the A168 alongside the A1. Beginning west of Marton-cum-Grafton, riders head over the A1 at Walshford and continue south until the junction with Wetherby Lane, and head back north and finish just north of the starting point on Limebar Lane.

This was Wolstenholme’s third win of the season so far having also tasted victory in last weekend’s Ravensthorpe CC 10-miler and the Otley CC 10 back in April. Next weekend he hopes to ride the Yorkshire Road Club 25-mile event on similar roads to the East Bradford CC event.

Jo Scott’s ride was only the second time she has finished an open time trial this year, having previously placed second in the Ferryhill Wheelers sporting 19.6 last month.
