Benjamin Williams (Cliff Pratt Racing) and Ellen Messingham (Barracuda Tri Club) took the men’s and women’s victories at the Yorkshire Coast Clarion 19.6 near Bridlington on Saturday.

Williams, aged 32, recorded a winning time of 43 minutes and 49 seconds over the tough 19.6-mile course.

The V461 saw competitors start and finish near Boynton and straight up past North Wood which was the King and Queen of the first hill competition.

Competitors then headed through Grindale and then turning through Burton Fleming and Wold Newton.

Once competitors reached the B1249 riders face tough two-mile climb to Octon which was done into a headwind.

Riders then had a descent into a headwind back down to Rudston before a final kick up to the finish.

Despite facing a tough wind on sections of the course the Yorkshire roads did remain dry throughout.

Williams finished third in the Birdwell Wheelers 10 last weekend and went two places better over the tough terrain.

Toby Williams (Velotik Racing Team) led the chase behind clocking a time of 44-44, while John Brearley (ADDFORM Vive Le Velo) finished third (45-57) as the top three riders broke the previous event record.

The quickest veteran was Andrew Askwith (Vive Le Velo) whose time of 50-53 was good enough for fifth position overall.

After winning the same event last season Messingham was the only woman rider and stopped the clock in a time of 58-42.

Steven Guymer (Squadra RT) was the quickest road bike finishing fourth overall in 49-17 and was crowned the King of the first hill.

Guymer finished second road bike in the Vive Le Velo 25 last weekend and went one better this time out.

“It was straight up a hill which is a 1 in 10 and it caught a few lads out,” said Guymer.

“It was straight out the blocks and with me being on a road bike I knew I didn’t stand a chance against the faster lads on the time trial bikes, so I just smashed it up the hill.

“It probably wasn’t the way I would have paced it normally, but I managed to reign it in to have something left for the rest of the route.

“It was nice to get that result in after finishing second the week before. It was good to get my first road bike win with a few more to go this year.

“Since the birth of my little boy I sold my time trial bike and just to keep my hand in at the minute I’m just riding road bike events.

“It’s good for me and given me something to do while becoming a parent. It’s been really useful having that category to target.”
