Records fall at Cleveland Wheelers 25

Course records fell in the senior women, junior boys and junior girls categories at the Cleveland Wheelers 25-mile time trial in County Durham on Sunday.

Fastest overall was Tom Hutchinson (Team Bottrill) with 53-10, but Sarah Harding (Team Catenary) clocked 1-05-29 to set a new female course record, beating Caroline Ratcliffe’s old mark by a whopping 5-42 to take victory on the T255 course near Sadberge.

Junior records also fell, with Daisy Freer (Stockton Wheelers) clocking 1-10-00 to lower her own course record by2-49, while Toby Simpson (Fietsen Tempo) clocked 59-26 for fifth on the day, beating Sam Murray’s 2019 previous course record by 21 seconds.

In the men’s category Hutchinson’s time was 3-42 quicker than runner-up Shaun Tyson (Protech Velo) with third being Richard Lilleker (Cleveland Wheelers), another 1-20 off the pace.

Harding clocked 1-05-29 to win by 4-31 from Free on a road bike in second, while Caroline Ratcliffe (Ferryhill Wheelers) equalled her previous course record time with 1-11-11 for third.

On road bikes, fastest was Josef Murray (AIMS Cycling) in 58-16 for fourth overall, 2-31 quicker than road bike runner-up Graham Thompson (Protech Velo), while Freer was best female on a road bike.

In the veterans categories, top over-40 was Paul Richardson (Derwentside CC), while Deborah Jeffries (Manilla Cycling) was top over-40 female.

The over-50s category was won by Caroline Ratcliffe and Shaun Tyson (Protech Velo) respectively, while Ray Hall (Adept Cycling) was quickest over-60 and Jon Zigmond (Cleveland Wheelers) was top over-70.

And the Ron Longmire Trophy was awarded to the fastest Teesside rider, which this year went to Cleveland Wheelers Richard Lilleker.
