Conditions were ideal for fast times at the Hemel Hempstead CC 10 in Buckinghamshire, and so it proved as Nick Trbovic and Kate Allan raced to victory in the men’s and women’s events near Aston Clinton.

Spindata had Trbovic, Alastair Luxford and Finlay Tarling down to finish within 13 seconds of each other, and they weren’t far off as the top three were just 19 seconds apart.

Trbovic clocked a personal best time of 18-04 to win by 18 seconds from Luxford (Full Gas RT), while just one second behind in third was junior ace Finlay Tarling (Willebrord Wil Vooruit) whose time of 18-23 was just nine seconds away from beating his own junior national competition record.

Reigning national 10-mile champion Kate Allan (Team Bottrill) was fastest female in a time of 19-38, a personal best by 20 seconds and the fourth fastest time ever recorded. It was just four seconds shy of Hayley Simmonds’ course record.

That gave her a convincing victory on the day by 59 seconds, with Laura Davies (Jadan Vive le Velo) clocking 20-37 for second spot, and Anastasia Bowler (Wahoo Le Col) just one second further back in third.

“I’ve not raced many fast courses in the past choosing to be a bit more varied with where I race but I wanted to get on a quick course this year and see what was possible,” said Trbovic, who is targeting the National 10 in September.

“The conditions looked great ahead of the race, almost everything went right and I managed a solid ride. The heat made the last two miles into a headwind a real struggle with almost everyone’s power down on the day.

“But it’s great to set a PB and win a superbly organised event - it was great to see a deep field with strong men’s and women’s fields having equal prizes. Chapeau to Hemel Hempstead CC!”

And Allan added: “It was certainly a fast day with very little wind, although it was perhaps a bit warmer than I would want it to be.

“Looking ahead, I’m hoping to ride the CTT National 10, 25, 50 and 100. I feel on track for all those apart from the 100, as I’ll be going into it without any real distance in my legs.”

Team Echelon won the team prize in a combined time of 58-56, the leading trio being Jon Howard, Simon Adcook and Simon Garrett. The team category was as hard-fought as the solo category, with six teams recording sub-hour times!

It was a warm and fast afternoon on the F11/10 course, with ten riders finishing under 19 minutes and 54 (including one woman) going under 20 minutes, and several clocking personal bests.

Only a light south easterly wind made it less than perfect, and that was only a problem coming into the finish.
