Lloyd Copp (Okehampton CC) took victory by 33 seconds in the Saint Piran 10 despite being delayed by a tractor, while Sophie Butcher (Tri Logic Cornwall) narrowly won the women’s event.

Despite his difficulties Copp clinched his second open time trial victory of the season posting a time of 20 minutes and 53 seconds.

Meanwhile, in the women’s event Butcher’s time of 27-12 was two seconds faster than quickest veteran on scratch Rose Willis (St Austell Whs CC).

The S6/10 saw competitors start near the junction of the A390 and B3275 at Tesillian before competing out and back on the B3275 to the roundabout at Brighton, with a slightly shorter return leg.

Copp, aged 30, from Crediton, finished fifth in the previous day’s City Cycle Couriers RT 10 posting 20-25 and despite going 18 seconds slower on this occasion his time was enough for victory.

Quickest veteran on scratch Nigel Polkinghorne (Duchy Velo) finished second in 21-26 which was a further minute faster than Craig Harper (Holsworthy Peloton) who stopped the clock in 22-36.

Spindata had predicted a victory for Polkinghorne in 21-49 ahead of Copp, who reversed that result on the day.

“I’m happy to win but it wasn’t the smoothest,” said Copp after taking the victory. “During my ride I got snarled up by a tractor.

“I couldn’t really do anything about it until the turn as the tractor was going too quick to overtake. It was quite a windy day, the road surface was not the best and it was quite technical.”

Women’s winner Butcher finished runner-up in the Penzance Wheelers 10 on the same course in April posting a time of 26-53 on that occasion.

Despite going slightly slower on this occasion in the windy conditions her time was enough for victory just two seconds faster than quickest veteran on scratch Willis (27-14), while Theresa Frost (Tri Logic Cornwall) finished third (28-40).

The quickest juvenile was Luke Matthews (Wheal Velocity) whose impressive time of 24-06 was good enough for eighth place overall.

Owain Barrett (Tri Logic Cornwall) took his second road bike category victory of the season recording an average speed of over 23.3 miles per hour to post a winning time of 25-39.

Veteran Terry Timms (Penzance Wheelers CC) finished second in the road bike category stopping the clock in 28-03, while juvenile George Stacey (Wheal Velocity) finished third (30-06).

The two-up event was won by the Wheal Velocity veteran pairing of Jeremy Stonehouse and Andy Blake who posted a time of 24-37.

The female pair of Rachel Fleet and Jenny Bolsom, of host club Saint Piran, were the fastest road bike competitors with the duo posting a time of 27-31.
