Tim McEvoy (Fulfil the Potential Race Team) and Martina Geraghty (Penzance Wheelers CC) took commanding victories in the men’s and women’s events at the Penzance Wheelers CC 25.

Veteran rider McEvoy won the National 12-hour Championship last season and showed his early season form to win in a time of 52 minutes and 23 seconds – two minutes quicker than his nearest rival.

The S120/25 saw riders compete on an out and back course along the A30 between Bodmin and Indian Queens.

McEvoy, aged 44, from Bodmin, won four open events last season and opened his account for 2023 on his home course.

“It’s quite handy having a course a quarter-of-a-mile from where I live,” said McEvoy.

“It was an horrendous first race of the year, my numbers were well off what I hoped. It looked like it should have been quite a quick day but it was so blowy it was devastatingly slow.

“It’s always nice to win but I was a bit disappointed with my time.”

Martina Geraghty

The defending National 12-hour Champion added that his focus this season would be on triathlon events after an injury prevented him from running and swimming last year.”

Andrew J Parnowski (City Cycle Couriers RT) led the charge behind finishing second in 54.24, while James Grogan (Www.Giant-Helston.co.uk) placed third (55-39).

In the women’s event Geraghty, aged 53, was also on fine form finishing over six minutes clear of her nearest competitor stopping the clock in 1-02-47.

Tri Logic Cornwall dominated the other women’s podium positions led by Clare Gwennap who finished second in 1-09-01 ahead of team-mate Sophie Butcher in third (1-10-25).

The battle for fourth in the women’s event couldn’t have been closer with Nichola Rorke (Exeter Whs CC) and Lisa Gower (Tri Logic Cornwall) both stopping the clock in exactly 1-14-24.
