Laura John (Oxford) and Miriam Jessett (De Montfort) shared victory in the women’s event at the Cambridge Univ CC BUCS 25-Mile Championship, while Axel Dopfer (Loughborough) charged to victory in the men’s race.

John and Jessett both stopped the clock in exactly one hour and 13 seconds to share victory, while Dopfer finished 33 seconds clear of his nearest rival.

The E33/25 saw competitors complete two laps of the fast triangle course which saw riders start and finish near Newmarket Racecourse.

Competitors headed out on the A1303 to Dunsley Corner before turning onto an unclassified road down to Six Miles Bottom.

The wet weather which had hit Suffolk overnight dried up before the event with the road drying, but competitors still had to battle against a strong wind.

Loughborough and Team Bottrill rider Dopfer finished fifth in the same event last season but was not to be denied this time out finishing 33 seconds clear of his nearest rival.

A close battle for second saw Matthew Coulson (Oxford) stop the clock in 51-33 which was nine seconds faster than Kieran Morris (Leeds Beckett) in 51-42.

“It was quite a good temperature and ideal for a power best,” said Dopfer.

“It was quite windy especially on the downhill section so was difficult to keep the four-spoke under control.

“I target all the BUCS events and even though I’m focusing on the track this year, the individual pursuit, so it’s good to see my form over longer distances is good still.

“I’ll have a threshold training block over Easter and then target the BUSC 10.”

The women’s event was a close battle for honours with the first four riders separated by just 31 seconds.

John and Jessett shared first position while Jo Matthews (Cambridge) finished third just 24 seconds behind the leading pair.
