Matthew Bagshawe

Matthew Bagshawe made it two wins from two races this season with success as fastest male at the Matlock CC 10-mile time trial near Winster on Sunday morning in Derbyshire, while in the women’s event Elizabeth Batt took top prize.

South Normanton CC rider Bagshawe was the final rider to set off and ensured he claimed first position by finishing in 21-37, with Fulfil the Potential RT rider Tom Thornely narrowly edging into second place in 21-43, while just five seconds back was Alex Hodgkinson of Ilkeston Cycle Club in 21-48.

On his win, Bagshawe said: “I can’t expect much more than two wins from two. It can be hard to say at this early stage, so I pace it quite conservatively on the way out.

“I almost did even splits power-wise, so performing better than I would have expected on paper and I’ve done a lot of work over the winter on position so that is paying off as well.

“I had my first Open win last June on the same course plus two this year with big personal bests so all the hard work is paying off.”

In the women’s event Batt, riding for Buxton CC/Sett Valley Cycles, clocked 26-43 on her way to finishing as fastest female ahead of promoting club rider Kelly Thorneycroft in 26-39, while Batt’s clubmate Tracy Gregory sealed the final podium spot in 29-20.

In taking victory, Bagshawe upset the SpinData prediction which had Thornely taking victory over the course, instead securing his win by six seconds.

Bagshawe now has successive wins in 2023, having won the Velo Club Long Eaton 10-mile time trial on April 9 this year, while he also won the Matlock CC 10-mile time trial on course A10/16 in July 2022.

Elsewhere, the team prize went to Buxton CC/Sett Valley Cycles, with Matt Ivings, Chris Lea and Miles Haslam finishing as their fastest three riders, while Matlock CC’s Frederick Farr was the quickest juvenile in 28-55 and Hodgkinson the highest placed senior.
