Mike Skidmore

Mike Skidmore led a one-two for Cheltenham & County CC at the VC Sevale (Malvern) 10-mile time trial, while Denise Burrows (AeroCoach) won the women’s event in Worcestershire.

Skidmore, 32 and from Cheltenham, recorded a winning time of 21 minutes and 10 seconds on the undulating course – just eight seconds quicker than team-mate William Haynes.

The K46/10 saw riders start near Severn Stoke before heading out and back along the A38 down to Twyning Interchange and the M50 junction.

On the return leg competitors climbed up past the finish coming after eight miles before descending through Severn Stoke and finishing towards Clifton.

Skidmore finished runner-up in last year’s Welsh CA 100-Mile Championship and the University of Bristol CC 10, but went one better this time out.

Haynes finished second just eight seconds behind, while a close fight for third saw Luke Allen (Team Echelon) finish in 21-31 – a single second faster than Tom Biggs (Cheltenham & County CC).

With three riders inside the top four positions Cheltenham & County CC also won the team prize.

Quickest veteran on scratch was Joseph Costello (Legato Racing Team) in 22-02, while para-cyclist Will Bjergfelt (Saint Piran) stopped the clock in 22-29 which was good enough for eighth overall.

In the women’s event Burrows was a clear winner, posting a time of 25-16 which was 31 seconds clear of her nearest challenger.

The 44-year-old also won the Stratford CC 10 last season and started her open time trial account for the season by recording an average speed of more than 23.7 miles per hour.

There was a close battle for second in the women’s event with Alice Connor (Velociposse CC) posting a time of 25-47 which was 13 seconds quicker than Kara Tranter (Wyre Forest Cycle Racing Club) in 26-00.

The two-up time trial event was won by the veteran composite pair of Andrew Overton and Martin Lines (Successcycling.co.uk/ Team Echelon).

They finished ahead of the host club pair of Mike Amery and William Davies (23-28) while the female veteran duo of Madeline Moore and Janet Birkmyre (TORQ Performance) finished third (24-20).
