Andrew Duggan powered to victory in the 68th edition of the Tyneside Vagabonds 47-mile mountain time trial in Northumberland, while Sarah Wilkinson was fastest female over the course near Belsay in Northumberland.

Two sets of temporary traffic lights did little to hamper the event with extra marshals making a note of any hold-ups, and even the weather stayed dry despite overcast conditions and threats of rain.

Duggan, 39 and riding for Muckle CC, clocked 1-56-55 to take the win by 1-28 from Team Kirkley Cycles’ Lewis Wake, while Cleveland Wheelers’ Rob Carter took third and was quickest on a road bike with 2-01-22.

Wilkinson, the 52-year-old Blaydon CC rider, covered the course in 2-25-04 to take the women’s prize by just over eight minutes from team-mate Louise Burnie, while Jan Scotchford (North Lancashire Road Club) was third, another three minutes off the pace.

“I think I paced my ride OK,” said Duggan, who took home the Marion Bunton Trophy as a reward for his win. “I was struggling a bit by the time I got to Elsdon – I probably got a bit too excited from the start because of the tail wind – but I managed to pull it back together and felt good again by the end.

“You can look at the Spindata information and see roughly how you are going to do, so I thought if I had a good day it would probably end up being quite close for the win. I haven’t entered any more events at the moment as I’m waiting for an operation on my knee – might try to put that off for a bit though after today.”

The Dorothy Dent Trophy went to Wilkinson for her win, while the Ron Steele Trophy went to Louise Burnie for the fastest timed ascent of Bilsmoor at 8-48.

As well as being best on a road bike, Rob Carter was also fastest veteran on standard with +7-25 which secured him the JK Marshall Trophy. He was also fastest veteran on actual time.

The fastest male ascent of Bilsmoor was Alexander Storey of GS Metro in 6:41 – Alex took home the Russell Thompson trophy.

Michael James was the fastest rider for the host club, Tyneside Vagabonds (2:15:14).

Muckle CC were fastest team (Duggan/Atkinson/Kane) in a combined time of 6:14:08, second team Blaydon CC (Magrath/Stoddart/Whaley) 6:37:20, third team Reifen Racing (Burns/Stokoe/Graves) 6:43:05
