Adam Pinder and Justine Norman were the fastest male and female as Tyneside Vagabonds staged a 100-mile time trial near Morpeth, Northumberland, on Sunday morning.

Doubling up as the Northumberland and Durham CA District Championships, the men’s title went to runner-up Keith Murray (Vector Racing) with Norman crowned the women’s district champion.

Murray had led overall for the first couple of laps, with Neil Fearn (Harrogate Nova CC) hot on his heels. But by the third lap Pinder had moved up into second spot, and a solid final lap saw him edge to victory in a time of 4-00-11, with Murray less than a minute behind with 4-01-02.

Third went to Blaydon CC’s Stephen Magrath in 4-06-43, while Matty Smith (Muckle CC) was fourth just ahead of Fearn who faded as the event went on.

Norman (Velo Culture) clocked 5-25-48 to win by just over two minutes from Alnwick and District Tri Club’s Denise Drummond, with third being 65-year-old Suzanne Harrison (Tyneside Vagabonds CC) in 6-08-25.

While the District titles went to Murray and Norman, the District veteran on standard prize went to Philip Kennell (GS Metro) who had a plus of 45-50.

In other categories Ian Gallon (North Tyneside Riders CC) was fastest on a road bike with 4-41-51, while the host club’s fastest rider was Martin Rasmussen, the Tyneside Vagabonds member clocking a personal best time of 4-28-38.

Meanwhile, kudos to 82-year-old Joe Applegarth (Durham Tri Club) who completed the event for the second year in a row. A time of 6-51-28 no doubt due to his habit of popping back to his car for some snacks mid-race!

Conditions were generally warm and pleasant for the race which began at 7am, although there was some early rain which led to slippery conditions early on.
