Joris Witstok (Cambridge University CC) took victory by over two minutes in the West Suffolk Wheelers & Tri Club 21, while under-23 rider Megan Free (West Suffolk Wheelers) won the women’s event.

Witstok, aged 25, took his first ever open time trial victory clocking a winning time of 47 minutes and four seconds.

The BS31 course saw riders complete two laps of a 10.5-mile loop around the Suffolk countryside taking in the villages of Risby, Flempton, Lackford and Cavenham, starting with a descent and finishing up a climb.

It wasn’t just the finishing climb that riders had to battle but also a strong southerly wind which resulted in a tough early-season test.

Witstok finished third in the Ely & District CC (hardriders) event last month but was a comfortable victor on this occasion.

David Halliday (Team Bottrill) led the fight for second finishing in 49-07 which was 23 seconds quicker than quickest veteran on scratch Robert Golding (Ely & District CC/B&T Motor Repairs) covering the course in 49-30.

In the women’s event local rider Free was competing in her first open time trial and took victory clocking a time of 1-01.19.

Veteran rider Amy Sole (Full Moo Cycling) finished second in 1-03.17 while Laura Brown (West Suffolk Wheelers) finished third (1-04-53).

The road bike category was also keenly fought out with Craig Rogers (Cambridge University CC) taking a convincing victory by over three minutes with an impressive time of 50-08.

Junior rider Harley Gregory (West Suffolk Wheelers) finished second in 53-41 while quickest veteran Philip Watkins (North Norfolk Whs) finished third (55-55).

The women’s road bike category was dominated by veteran riders with Judy Brown (Newmarket Cycling & Triathlon Club) winning in 1-02-13 beating Rita Rue (West Suffolk Wheelers) into second (1-10-24) while Caroline Wyke (CC Sudbury) finished third (1-23-27).

The only medium gear competitor was Boyd Nicholas (West Suffolk Wheelers) who completed the course in 1-02-29.
