Jari Verstraeten (Team Bottrill) broke the course record on his way to a second win of the weekend at the Southern Counties CU Sporting Weekend over the 25-mile distance, while Katie Simmonds (Horsham Cycling) won the women’s event.

After breaking the course record in the 10-mile event the previous day Verstraeten, in Surrey and Sussex for a long weekend, recorded another course record knocking 71 seconds off Pat Wright’s 2017 benchmark with a winning time of 53 minutes and 53 seconds.

The G25/43 saw riders start and finish in Okewood Hill and starting with an opening three-mile loop before completing three laps of a course taking in Ockley, Forest Green and Wallswood.

Riders climbed 1,300 feet over the 25 miles in cool temperatures of between six and 11 degrees.

Verstraeten, aged 33, had won in his first open time trial over 10 miles the previous day and made it two wins from two in the Southern Counties CU Sporting 25.

Alex Franks (VC de Londres) broke the junior course record on his way to second place with the 16-year-old recording a time of 57- 06.

Scratch rider and fastest veteran Mark Smith (Crawley Whls) had to settle for third place on this occasion clocking 58-17.

The women’s category was a keenly fought contest between two riders with Katie Simmonds (Horsham Cycling) winning in exactly one hour and 14 minutes.

Simmonds was taking part in her first open time trial of the season and took victory by 37 seconds ahead of Tracey Williams (Brighton Mitre CC) in 1-14-37.
