Junior rider Sam Beaton (Plymouth Corinthian CC) showed his potential for the season by taking victory by 37 seconds in the Saint Piran 10, while Rose Willis (St Austell Whs CC) won the women’s event.

Despite cold March conditions for the early season event 18-year-old Beaton clocked a winning time of 23 minutes and 57 seconds.

The S6/10 course saw riders compete on the out and back B3275 starting on the outskirts of Truro and hugging the Tresillian River north through Ladock and New Mills before turning for home at Brighton.

Beaton has a personal best 10-mile time of 20-55 set last season on the S4/10 but took this first open victory on this occasion.

Veteran Chris Guest (St Austell Wheelers) led the charge behind and recorded his best open placing for four years taking second in 24-34.

The battle for third couldn’t have been closer with veterans Ian Houvenaghel (Royal Navy & Royal Marines CA) and Karl Jones (Newbury Velo) both clocking exactly 24-50.

Jed Claxton (Wheal Velocity) was fastest juvenile getting his season underway with a benchmark time of 27-06.

Rose Willis (St Austell Wheelers) was the only woman competitor setting a time of 27-20 in her first open event of 2022.

Last season Willis posted a fastest time of 24-40 over 10 miles and will next be competing in the Giant Helston 25 later this month.
