Patrick Hickey (Rossendale RC) and Karen Bailey (East Lancashire Road Club) came out on top at the Kent Valley Road Club 25-mile Edwin Howson Memorial on Sunday morning in Cumbria.

Using the popular L2524 course near Levens, the charity event was won by 29-year-old Ramsbottom-based Hickey, who was securing his first ever open time trial victory in a time of 51-59, just three seconds better than his nearest rival.

Derek Parkinson (Springfield Financial RT) took second in 52-02, 14 seconds better than third-placed Alistair Ribbands (Manchester Wheelers) in third.

And in the women’s category 44-year-old Karen Bailey covered the course in 1-03-06, good enough for victory by 1-09 from Sue Cheetham (North Lancasihre Road Club), while third was Vive le Velo rider Sandra Burrows.

Conditions were dry with just a light wind, but it wasn’t as fastest as it had been on similar roads for the previous evening’s 10-mile event staged by Kent Valley RC at Levens, with several riders suffering from having ridden both events.

A prolific rider with 12 open time trials ridden so far this season, Hickey’s win comes after placing second in the East Lancashire Road Club 10 in April, as well as the Lancashire Road Club 10 and Preston Wheelers 25 last month.

He will be looking for more glory with rides in the VC Cumbria 25 next Sunday, as well as the Rossendale RC hilly 10.3 and VTTA Lancs and Lakes 50 the following weekend.

Similarly, this was Karen Bailey’s first open time trial win of the season, having had a previous best place of fourth in the VC Cumbria 10 last month. She also placed fifth in the West Pennine Road Club 10. She is next due to be in action in the West Pennine Road Club hilly 14.6-mile midweek event on June 30.
