Christopher Fennell (The Independent Pedaler) clinched the course record in the Kent CA 50 knocking two minutes off his previous mark while Pip Jenkins (Southborough & Dist Wheelers) also bettered her record.

Fennell, 22, has been in emphatic form so far this season taking a host of wins. Ideal conditions on the Kent coast led to some fast times with Fennell winning in a personal best time of one hour, 41 minutes and 22 seconds.

His time was over two minutes faster than his previous Q50/11 course record of 1:43.36.

The course starts south of Hamstreet before heading towards the coast on the A20 and then A2070 before completing a loop which goes out towards Rye before following the coastline past London Ashford Airport and then north via North Romney and joining the outward leg home.

Nobody could come close to Fennell, who took silver in the National Closed Circuit Championships last year.

“It was a course record but it was improving my own by a little bit,” said Fennell. “It was perfect conditions as there was completely no wind. It’s a completely open course which is quite challenging with a lot of sharp corners so we got a bit lucky with the weather.

“I’m being very consistent at the moment and I’m enjoying the racing. My main target for the year is the National 25-Mile Championships where I’m aiming to get a good position.”

Leading the fight for second saw Neil Lauder (PMR @ Toachim House) clock a time of 1:46.14 which was 20 seconds faster than Nicholas Fennell (Thanet RC) in third.

Mark Doxey (Abellio - SFA Racing Team) was the fastest veteran on scratch finishing fifth overall in 1:50.48.

30-year-old Jenkins held the previous women’s course record in a time of 2:02.43 but bettered that by nine seconds to take the category victory in 2:02.34.

She was chased home by fastest veteran woman Jennifer Smart (VC Norwich) finishing in 02:09.16 while Debbie Percival (Kent Velo Girls/Boys) finished third in 02:16.43.
