Jonathan Wears (SSLL Racing Team) and Richard Bickley (Border City Wheelers) both clocked 20.25 in the Beacon Wheeelers 10-mile time trial in Cumbria on Saturday afternoon, sharing overall victory.

Meanwhile, Claire Swoboda (Chorlton Velo) was the fastest female in 23.12, the veteran being more than a minute quicker than her nearest rival, Katie Lukas (Beacon Wheelers).

The out-and-back L108 course begins and ends to the west of Newbiggin on Lune, and heads west along the  A685 to Tebay, turning just before the junction with the M6 and retracing back to finish just short of the starting point.

While Bickley and Wears tied for top spot, third was Paul Thirling (Hartlepool CC) with 21-15, while 11 seconds further off the pace was the promoting club’s Tom Roper who took the prize as fastest junior rider.

Thirling was the fastest veteran in the 40-49 age group, while Paul Warrener (Rossendale RC) was best 50-59 veteran and Russ Richardson (Teesdale CRC) was the best over-60 rider and fifth overall in an impressive 21.28.

Although his performance on the L108 was impressive, Wears has gone faster, having clocked 18-58 on the V718 course in East Yorkshire in the previous weekend’s Selby CC 10, while he tasted victory in Huddersfield Star Wheelers’ 10-mile event on July 2 where he was three seconds away from breaking the 20-minute mark.

Bickley has already tasted victory this season, having won the Blackburn and District CTC 11-mile time trial in June as well as the Border City Wheelers 20-mile TT in March.

And women’s winner Swoboda has also enjoyed good form this season.

Among her other 2017 victories are a win in the Nelson Wheelers 10 and Barrow Central Wheelers 21 in April, as well as the Common Lane Occasionals 17.2-mile TT in March.

The Beacon Wheelers event also included a heat of the National Youth Championships, and it was the promoting club’s Jack Rutland and Flora Knight (Kendal CC) who were fastest boy and girl with 23.21 and 26.46 respectively.
