Mark Smith was the fastest rider over 50 miles at the East Sussex CA event on Sunday, winning by a margin of 31 seconds.

The 43-year-old Crawley Wheelers rider coped best with the hot conditions to record a time of 1:48.35 in the heat.

There was very little wind at all, although a slight tailwind made it a little easier for the riders setting off later in the morning.

Pete Morris, 38, of Team ASL was second in a time of 1:49.06, just over half a minute slower than Smith.

Howard Shaw, 31, took the last step on the podium, the Eastbourne Rovers CC rider completing in a time of 1:50.07.

Shaw was part of the winning team, combining with Eastbourne team mates John Cordner, who completed in 2:00.05 and David Clark who made it round in 2:00.06.

There were 48 riders competing on the day but only two women took part with 26-year-old Ruth Summerford of Eastbourne Rovers CC fastest in a time of 2:10.00, placing her 30th overall.

Veteran Rachel Baker of Mid Sussex Triathlon Club was the only other woman who completed, 37th overall in a time of 2:13.24.
