This year, the East Surrey RC Hardriders event in Leigh near Reigate had to be shortened from 29.9 miles to 27.25 miles due to roadworks on a bridge but this didn’t deter the strong field from putting in some fantastic times, headed up by winner Rob Sharland of Paceline RT who clocked a time of 59.43.
The event organiser is convinced that a course and event record would have been broken had the usual route been taken but they had to make do with the shorter course and it was Sharland’s own team mate Pat Wright who pushed him closest with a time of 1:01.02.
Twickenham CC veteran Liam Maybank completed the podium, 22 seconds down on Wright and 41 seconds off the pace of the winner.
Mel Wasley of SSLL RT was fastest woman with a time of 01:01.19. Theo Tadros of In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp was fastest junior and Paceline took the team prize with Wright and Sharland being joined by seventh-overall Ben Elliott to make a combined time of 3:06.24.
