Phoebe Barker and Will Lowden (both Cambridge University CC) were fastest female and male riders respectively at the Oxford University CC hill-climb on Keeper’s Hill Lane, near Oxford, on Saturday morning.
Cambridge won the varsity clash with Oxford, reversing last year’s result from the inaugural competition which assured the winners the coveted prize – an old wheel from a bike that was crashed by the organiser on a chain gang ride and mounted on a plinth!
Barker clocked 4-29.7 for the 1.77-kilometre climb of Keeper’s Hill Lane in Wytham Woods, setting a new course record and giving her the win in the women’s category by 21 seconds from team-mate Sannah Zaman, with third being Oxford University’s Katrina Tse, another 8.2 seconds back.
Cambridge rider Lowden covered the course in 3-35.8 to win by 1.9 seconds from Gabe Dellar (Stolen Goat RT) with Joe Adlam-Cook ensuring third spot for Cambridge with 3-39.6.
Conditions were fair and dry after what organisers thought could be a washout with Storm Babet thankfully being kind in the Oxford area.
Fastest and only tandem pairing were the Oxford University CC duo of Charlie Godfrey and James Nichols who covered the course in 4-40.6.
Barker’s only other appearance in a CTT open event was in the National Team Time Trial Championships back in May, when she was part of the trio of Cambridge University riders who placed third overall with Jo Matthews and Miranda Clements.
A prolific rider of CTT events and the reigning National Circuit Champion, this is win number four for Will Lowden who tackles time trials as well as hill climbs.
Eighth last year, he has entered this year’s National Championships next Sunday and will be hoping to better that performance on The Struggle in Cumbria and maybe add to his other wins in 2023 which have included third in the National 100-Mile Championships and second overall in the Merlin Cycles Classic Series.
